1787-1816 Entire letters between G.B and Portugal or Spain showing the mail routings during the Napoleonic period, with 1787 letter from Lisbon sent overland with "D'ESPAGNE" handstamp, 1808-12 letters sent by Falmouth Packets to Lisbon (2), Corunna (2) or Cadiz, 1814 letter to Lisbon sent via Bilbao with oval "HESPANIA", 1814 letter from Cuba to London privately carried to Lisbon with British Packet Agency handstamp and forwarding agent endorsement, 1815 letter by packet from Corunna (during 100 days war) and 1815 letters sent via France (3), also three later letters. Azores - "Tin Can" Mail. 1902-09 Picture postcards (20) and covers (3) from Norddeutscher Lloyd ships all sent ashore in the Azores, mails and money for postage being lowered in a sealed metal ball to a local whale boat and rowed to Velas where the mails were dealt with by the NDL agent. All franked by Angra stamps cancelled at Velas (20) or Angra do Heroismo (3), the seven 1902-04 items handstamped "Forwarded by / John C. Lacerda / Agent for the Norddeutscher / Lloyd, of Bremen, at / Vellas - S. Jorge - Azores" in violet (6) or red. Also picture postcards showing a mail cask being lowered to the whale boat (3) or the boat returning to shore with the mail (2), and associated postcards (8). An interesting and rare group, one 1902 card inscribed by the sender "By Bottle Post from the Azores Islands". (36).
