A MARITIME Certificate of Discharge, 1873, with an accompanying note from the Captain.Edwin Austin had been engaged as a carpenter for a return voyage on the "Dunkeld" from England to Madras. At the conclusion of the voyage he was given this document, duly signed and stamped at "M.M.OFFICE / MAY 5 /73 / POPLAR NO.2". The accompanying note, from Captain Thomas Dennett, acknowledges his good work and character. The wooden sailing ship, built and launched in Aberdeen in 1863, was a frequent visitor to Australian waters until she was lost in the Gaspar Straits, near Indonesia, in 1876.(Image)
