Stampless folded letter datelined San Francisco, August 27, 1850, addressed to Maryland. San Francisco 27 AUG circular datestamp and a manuscript “40” rate marking, rated for the 40c transcontinental rate established by the Act of August 14, 1848 for letters conveyed between the Pacific Coast and the Atlantic states. This rate remained in effect until June 29, 1851.
The letter predates California statehood, which occurred on September 9, 1850.
The enclosed letter contains interesting content discussing receipt of earlier mail, plans to depart for the mines, expectations of winter conditions, family news, financial remittances, agricultural observations, weather patterns, and social life in California during the Gold Rush. Front page of the San Francisco Herald, dated July 25, 1857, with a large blue Wells, Fargo & Co.'s California Express and Banking Company, Express & Exchange, Montgomery St. cor. California, San Francisco oval handstamp. There are various shipping and steamboat advertisements.
There are only a handful of recorded uses of this handstamp, the two others also used on newspapers, with one of the examples also on a partial clipping from the same 1857 San Francisco Herald issue, and another example on the front page of a 1857 San Francisco Daily Globe newspaper.
