1851, 1¢ blue, type Ia, position 97R4 with curl in "C" of "Cent" (Scott 6), large margin at right, clear at left except just touching plume at top, into at top and bottom, lovely dark color, circular datestamp cancel; tiny scuff, otherwise Fine, The earliest documented use of Scott #6 is April 19, 1857. The earliest documented use of Scott #19 (the perforated 1¢ type Ia), is Sept. 9, 1857, and the earliest documented use of any 1¢ plate 4 perforated stamp is July 26, 1857 (Scott #22). These dates are also recorded in Neinken's book on page 259The point is that Scott 6 was only used for a short time, before being replaced by perforated plate 4 stamps, resulting in a low supply today., with 2000 P.S.E. certificate graded 35 (different standards than today). Scott $10,500.
Per the header in the Scott Specialized catalog, "Type Ia comes only from the bottom row of both panes of plate 4." The header fails to state that 18 of the 20 positions 91L4-100L4 & 92R4-95R4, 97R4-100R4) are Type Ia (91R4 & 96R4 are Type Ic). Neinken notes (p. 275) that the curl was caused by a thread that adhered to the relief during the transfer to the plate.(Image)
