Black cds with several strikes of waffle grid killer on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire (U10) additional franked with two single 1857 12¢ black adhesives (36), potentially replaced (read below) and vertical pair of 1857 10¢ green, type V (35) to Santa Margheritta, Sardinia, Italy; the adhesive stamps are applied over the top of a Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank with the envelope apparently being used without carriage by Wells, Fargo & Co.; black straight line "OVERLAND" handstamp (Type 2) applied in San Francisco; total 47¢ postage overpaying the 42c rate to Sardinia via Prussia; various other markings include red italic "19" (credit from New York to Prussia, which included 12¢ postage beyond the German Austrian Postal Union); manuscript "f3¾" indicates the foreign postage in silbergroschen; probably carried on the last voyage of the North Atlantic Steamship Company Adriatic, which sailed Oct 6, 1860 and arrived in Southampton on Oct 17; with a total of seven (7) various backstamps and forwarding markings on verso; 2000 P.F. certificate states "It is a genuine usage, the right 12c stamp with a tear at bottom, and the entire with a repaired spindle hole at left"; however, a June, 2011 article in Western Express, co-authored by Richard Frajola and Michael Perlman (cover census SFC2-1) notes that "clean PFC but two 12¢ replaced"; therefore sold AS IS, Very Fine appearance, a rare example of an "Overland" handstamped cover mailed to Sardinia, Italy. (ELD-400) red double-ring datestamp with magenta manuscript date and red "40" handstamped rating on 1850 orange cover to Boston Mass., cover with original miner's enclosure included describing the town of Culloma and mining in the area, "…We started up on the fifth of February and stopped at Weaver's Creek three weeks where we made expenses in the intervals of fair weather; but the constant rains swelled the Creek and drove us out, which induced us to come up here - This is the place where the gold was first discovered, formerly called Sutter's Mills; it is a place of some five hundred inhabitants and is the general depot for the supply of the adjacent mining region…we intent to strike tent and leave for better "diggings"…", Very Fine and choice, possibly the finest known strike of the very rare marking. Black oval datestamp (Williams SAC-2480) with magenta manuscript "40" rate marking on folded letter to Cincinnati, Ohio, reverse with rare red circular handstamp "San Francisco Recd 6 Mar" (similar to Williams SAF-310 reported used Sep 30, 1850 to Nov 5, 1851, but with the "Recd" at the bottom of the dial; thus, unlisted in Williams and apparently the precursor to SAF-310); letter datelined "Plumas Sunday March 17, 1850" (erroneously dated by the writer), with contents, in part, "…I have been in the New Town one week at 10$ per day and board Mr. Nathan Scotfield the surveyor engaged me to come up from Sacramento City on Saturday 9 Feby. We arrived at this Beautiful Location at dusk and slept in a cabin without a roof…I am within 20 miles or less from the region of gold diggers and hundreds if not thousands pass along daily on land or water thro this place…Steam Boats can run within 100 feet of our cabin during the whole year, 55 miles above Sacramento City or about 200 miles from San Francisco…Plumas is on the Feather River some 20 miles above its mouth and about the same below the mouth of Yuba River where it empties into Feather River…W.C. Laurence" with much additional writing on mining, immigration, etc.; some internal staining of lettersheets, toning along folds, Very Fine, This cover is the subject of an article written by Dr. Milgram in Western Express (Sept. 2010).
