image 1892 (January 22), S.S. Eider Shipwreck cover, New York to Frankfurt, Germany, postmarked with New York duplex, handstamped with violet “Per Eider” and VIA ENGLAND, wrecked en route to London and struck with violet two-line 'Frankirter Brief aus / gestrandetem D. Eider geborgen,' no backstamps, faults at right, but a most unusual disaster cover; The Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer 'Eider', on a voyage from New York to Southampton was stranded on the Atherfield Ledge near St. Catherines Point, half a mile from the Isle of Wight, at 10 p.m on the 31st of January, 1892. It was first thought that the steamer was undamaged, and that she could be refloated. By the following evening it was decided to disembark the passengers, and at the same time some of the mail was also landed. The following day, with the seas breaking over the ship, which was by now leaking badly, the aft holds which contained the remaining mail was full of water. On the morning of February 3, with others unloaded over the following days by divers, and the three violet cachets found on this cover were applied. (Image)

image 1893-2001, mint and used collection of United States, consisting of thousands of stamps in three United States Seal albums, a stockbook of mint stamps and a box of additional pages for the albums, to 2010, mostly used prior to 1955, a mix of used and mint from that point, with good mint face value and very good catalogue value, most sets are missing some denominations, though note good representation of several popular series' including Columbians to the 15c plus the 50c; Pan American Exposition missing only the 8c; a good number of the different printings of the Washington-Franklins; and many of "Farley's follies" as singles, as well as Americana and Transportation issues, Bicentennial souvenir sheets, Celebrating the Century sheets and some "Legends of" series, ideal for a collector looking to fill gaps and for resellers, and would serve a new collector of USA well as a solid starting point, the early stamps in mixed condition, overall fine to very fine; our photos provide a mere glimpse at the contents.
