10¢ Aerogramme FDC Sept. 14, 1954 (Scott UC2), folded into letter size and unaddressed, canceled by "United Nations New York Sept. 14, 1954" UN cancel, Extremely Fine, this is the scarcest of all United Nations First Day Covers with no contemporary cachets made.
Basically unannounced and without a first day of issue ceremony, only a few dozen first day covers were prepared for this issue for the UN archives, and each of these had a cancel in the same location as this example and had a small piece of cellophane tape to hold the top backflap in place. Upon discovery by the philatelic community, the clerk parpared additional FDCs and these can be identified by the cancel applied closer to the top of the aerogramme and the lack of cellophane tape on the reverse.(Image)
