Moffett was Chief of the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics, while Paul W. Litchfield and Karl Arnstein were President and Vice-President of the Goodyear-Zeppelin Company and so much more. Van Auken, Naval War College, Newport R.I." with various notes on back by the recipeint -- 1) "The sister airship "Akron" was lost 4 April 1933 - off New Jersey with Admiral Moffett N.S.W. - W.R.V" 2) the blue ink signature of "Alger H. Dresel, Commander U.S.N." with pencil note ("Cmdr. Airship "Macon" (He carried this on first flight W.R.V.") and 3) "Before Commissioning No March cancellation" at left edge, Extremely Fine, only four First Flight Covers of the U.S.S. Macon are known.


The U.S.S. Macon was commissioned into the U.S. Navy on June 23, 1933, with Commander Alger H. Dresel in command.

Jun. 26 1925" circular datestamp and "Bar Harbor Maine Jul. 4" duplex cancel on cover with purple "Via Air Mail by U.S. Navy Dirigible" two line and black "U.S.S. Shenandoah" handstamps, addressed by Joseph Steinmetz to his daughter at "Beaver" Camp for Girls, Extremely Fine and rare. Give credit to young Frances for keeping this cover in such superb condition!!! The U.S.S. Shenandoah underwent maintenance and ground test work in the first half of 1925 and this cover was carried on its first flight of the year. Soon, it would be destroyed on Sept. 3 1925 during its 57th flight.
