image Hawaii, 1851-52, "Missionary" Issue, 2¢ blue, Type II. Neat strike of "San Francisco, Cal., Apr 16" town cancellation, ample to mostly large margins all around, bold color; with only a small surface scrape at top, light creases and with no added restoration, mounted on tissue paper to strengthen and then onto card, Very Fine, Siegel Census No. 1-II-CAN-5, ex-William P. Brown, Ferrary, Hind, Atherton, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Honolulu Advertiser & Ishikawa, with 1996 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1; $250,000.

ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE HAWAIIAN 2¢ MISSIONARY ISSUE AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE CANCELED BY THE SAN FRANCISCO CIRCULAR DATE STAMP - A WONDERFUL FIRST CLASS HAWAIIAN RARITY OF WHICH ONLY TEN EXAMPLES ARE IN PRIVATE HANDS.

According to Meyer-Harris, when the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawaii, on June 18, 1851, passed an act reaffirming the Decree of the Privy Council of December 20, 1850, the postmaster was authorized to have stamps of appropriate denominations printed. Postmaster Whitney immediately took steps to put this directive into effect, and the first Hawaiian stamps, the so-called "Missionaries," were placed on sale October 1, 1851. The "Missionaries" are thus called because they are nearly always found on correspondence from American missionaries in Hawaii to their friends back in the States, either in California, or in New York, Connecticut, or Massachusetts.

The "Missionaries" were produced at the government printing office, where the government journal "The Polynesian" was printed. The printing form was composed of two subjects side by side, each set up out of materials from a job printer's case: characters, printer's rules, and ornaments, all locked in a small chase. All three denominations, including the 2 cent value, were printed from the same form by changing the large central figure of value and the words in the bottom line.

The 2¢ Missionary stamp, which was intended to paid the unit rate of postage on newspapers and other printed matter to the United States, ranks as one of the world's greatest rarities. It did not have an extremely large use in the first place, and the newspaper wrappers, having no sentimental or record value, were thrown away. These two facts probably account for its great rarity. Although the intention of this issue was that of paying printed matters rates, it is shown that it was used to prepay the 2¢ ship captain's fee in Honolulu. This is most notably demonstrated on the iconic Dawson cover and most likely was the same for this stamp offered here. Another example is also known on piece in combination with the first 13¢ Missionary issue (Scott #3), which bears a San Francisco circular datestamp, and appears to represent a combination paying the triple 5¢ Hawaiian postage.

This Missionary stamps was affixed in Honolulu by postmaster Henry Whitney. The letter was sent from Auburn, Mass. to Whitney's sister, the wife of Rev. John Pogue, a missionary stationed at Lahainaluna. United States postage was fully paid to San Francisco by the U.S. 3¢ pair. ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLES OF THE 1851 13¢ "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY CANCELED BY A BRILLIANT RED DOTTED "SUGAR CANE" CANCELLATION.

The Missionary stamps were designed and printed by Henry Whitney at the Government Printing House on a small press used for business cards. A form of two subjects was made from available type and printed on fragile pelure paper, meaning the far majority of Missionary stamps are repaired to some degree. This stamp offered here was issued on October 1, 1851 to pay the 13¢ combined U.S. and Hawaiian postage for a single letter bound for an Eastern American destination.

Titus Coan in Hilo, Hawaii, bold red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid, Jul 26" cds (236.05, type III), received at San Francisco with U.S. 1851, 12¢ black (17) margins huge to slightly in at left, affixed over 13¢ and tied with 5¢ by "San Francisco, Cal., Sep 5" cds, Very Fine, signed on reverse by Stanley Ashbrook, with his note "In my opinion this use was July 1856, hence the 5c Hawaii is…#5", dated Oct. 15, 1957., ex-Krug, Middendorf, Rust, Pietsch, Gross & Przybyl.
Scott No. 5; Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.

ONE OF THE FINEST EARLY MIXED FRANKING HAWAII "PASTE-OVER" COVERS KNOWN.

The Rev. Titus Coan and his wife Fidelia, as members of the 7th Company of American missionaries, arrived in Hawaii on June 6, 1835 and were stationed at the Hilo mission where they would remain for the rest of their lives. After Fidelia's passing in 1872, he married Lydia Bingham, the daughter of Rev. Hiram Bingham (from the 1st Company). Rev. Coan completed his autobiography in 1881, a year before he died.

Carried to San Francisco on the bark "Fanny Major" (dep. Honolulu July 26, 1856; arr. S.F. Aug. 25) where it received a black San Francisco postmark dated Sep. 5 for the departure of the PMSC "Golden Gate" to Panama City (dep. S.F. Sep. 5, 1856; arr. Panama City Sep. 18) tying both the U.S. and Hawaii 5¢ stamps, carried across the isthmus to Aspinwall for connection with the USMSC "Illinois" (dep. Aspinwall Sep. 19, 1856; arr. N.Y. Sep. 27); posted prepaid in Hilo with the Hawaii 5¢ and 13¢ stamps, resulting in a 1¢ overpayment of the 17¢ rate (5¢ Hawaii postage, 2¢ ship fee and 10¢ U.S. East coast rate). At the Honolulu post office, the 12¢ U.S. stamp was placed over the Hawaii 13¢ stamp, to save the burden of accounting to San Francisco for the U.S. postage, with stamp partially lifted at left to reveal the 13¢ stamp; a so-called "paste-over" cover, with ornate embossed ornamentation around the envelope's periphery, addressed to Titus Munson Coan, the oldest of four Coan children, who was attending Yale and would eventually earn his medical degree at Williams College. The cover likely held birthday wishes from the family (Titus would turn 20 on Sept. 27, 1856).

Scott No. 5; Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

A VERY SCARCE SOLO USE OF THE 1853 5C ISSUE, ONE OF ONLY 15 FULL COVERS RECORDED BY GREGORY.

The recipient of this letter, Adam Speirs, was 14 when his family arrived in Salt Lake City in 1848 with the last company of Mormons. He served in the militia and later as a police court justice.

Carried on the American bark Fanny Major (dep. Honolulu Apr.12, 1855; arr. SF May 2), this cover would then have been sent south by steamer to Los Angeles (port of San Pedro) and San Diego for George Chorpenning's stagecoach departure to Salt Lake City. The San Francisco handstamp "5" indicates the under-3,000 mile rate that was to be paid by the recipient. The 2¢ ship fee was charged to the Honolulu post office account.

Scott No. 6; Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.

AN OUTSTANDING COVER IN GEM CONDITION AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COVERS OF CLASSIC HAWAIIAN PHILATELY.

The addressee of this cover, Warren Goodale (1825-1899), was Lucy (Goodale) Thurston's nephew, one of the early missionaries arriving in Hawaii in 1820 with the Pioneer Company of Missionaries. The Goodale family were prominent members of Marlborough (Marlboro), Massachusetts, dating back to the mid-18th century. Warren Goodale was born in Marlborough in 1825, he traveled to Hawaii in 1849, where he served as a tutor at the Royal School in Honolulu before being appointed Marshal of the Kingdom and later Collector of Customs. Following the death of his wife, in 1861, he returned with his family to Massachusetts and enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. After his service, he resettled in Hawaii and became active in the sugar industry.

Although the cover bears no year date, its address to Warren Goodale in Honolulu establishes that it was mailed prior to his resignation as Collector of Customs in December 1863. The manuscript "3" handstamp may indicate 3¢ U.S. postage, consistent with a September 11, 1863 mailing from Marlborough after the July 1863 reduction of the U.S. rate to California to 3¢. The 13¢ Hawaiian franking would leave a 10¢ credit, sufficient to satisfy the 7¢ Hawaiian charge (5¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee). The absence of San Francisco and Honolulu transit markings is typical for mail to Hawaii during this period.

The Hawaiian adhesive was likely conveyed to Massachusetts by a member of the Goodale family. Its acceptance on outbound mail to Hawaii appears to have been permitted by the Marlborough post office - possibly in recognition of the "United States 8 Cts." inscription on the stamp, the family's standing in the community, or both. From there, the cover would have traveled via San Francisco before onward transmission to Honolulu.

Harris & Risvold, with 2015 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 9; Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.

ONE OF ONLY EIGHT HAWAIIAN COVERS BEARING THE SAN FRANCISCO "FOREIGN" MARKING, AND ONLY TWO OF THESE BEAR THE 2¢ BLACKJACK.

The "FOREIGN" handstamp used at San Francisco is only recorded on Hawaii covers for a brief 3 week period (Sep. 3-Sep. 23, 1864), and was applied erroneously by the San Francisco post office on Hawaii mail, since Hawaii had an "arrangement already concluded", i.e., the 1850 Hawaii-United States treaty. As per the provisions of Hawaii's Act of July 1, 1863, Hawaiian postage was set at 5¢ Hawaiian, plus 5¢ for delivery to the United States (including the 2¢ ship fee). After passage of the United States' Postal Act of July 1, 1864, the San Francisco postmaster Perkins began incorrectly applying the new U.S. "blanket foreign rate" of 10¢ thinking it applied to Hawaiian mails, which it did not. After Perkins received notice of his error from the U.S. Postmaster General, the "FOREIGN" handstamp on Hawaiian mail was discontinued, sometime before Nov. 7, the date of Perkin's letter to Kalakaua acknowledging restoration of the 1863 rates, i.e., 3¢ US postage plus 2¢ ship fee. The confusion in Hawaii over what the actual rate was for mail addressed to the United States would last until December 3,1864, when the letter from Perkins actually arrived in Hawaii.---Discussed in detail in Fred Gregory's books "Hawaii Foreign Mail to 1870", Vol. II, pgs. II-180-185, Fig. 17-34. Illustrated in the Meyer-Harris book "Stamps of Hawaii", pg. 74.

Carried on the "Young Hector" (dep. Honolulu Aug. 28, 1864; arr. S.F. Sep. 22).

An. O Forbes, Condolence"; small bit of scuffing at left edge affecting postmark, part of top flap missing, Very Fine, ex-Holman, Emerson & Haas.
Scott No. 16; Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

A LOVELY INTER-ISLAND NUMERAL COVER.

Warren Goodale, born in 1826 in Marlborough, Mass., was a nephew of Lucy (Goodale) Thurston of the First Company of missionaries that arrived in Hawaii in 1820. Warren eventually made his way to Hawaii, teaching at the Royal School with KKIV as one of his first students. He was appointed Marshall of the Kingdom in 1849 and for several months also acted as the Sheriff of Oahu before taking a position with the Interior Dept. as their Chief Clerk. Eventually appointed as Collector General of Customs in 1853 by KKIII, he served in that position until 1863 when he returned to the East coast and enlisted to fight on the Union side of the Civil War. He was promoted to Lt. and served as a junior officer in the 114th U.S. Colored Infantry (USCI) when it marched into Richmond, Virginia as one of the first Federal regiments to enter the Confederate capital after its abandonment. He returned to Hawaii after the war and served as the postmaster at Haiku, Maui for several years.

Anderson O. Forbes was the resident Pastor at the Kalua'aha mission station on the island of Moloka'i, and would serve as postmaster there from 1866-1869. Their mail service was handled through the Lahaina post office, thus the pen cancel was likely made at the Kalua'aha post office, and then the letter was transferred to Lahaina where it received the blue postmark. Westerberg, in his study of the Hawaiian numerals, showed that this iteration of plate 3 was used in early 1862. The mention of "Condolence" in the docketing also gives a clue as to the year date, as Goodale's wife Ellen had died tragically the previous year, a week after giving birth to twins. Following his wife's passing, Warren took his three older children and the infant twins back to Massachusetts, arranging for his brother's family to raise them there. He returned to Honolulu in late 1861 and resumed his duties as Collector General of Customs for another two years before returning to the East coast to enlist in the Union Army.
