The Art Bunce Collection of the 15c Large Queen Group I
Sale No: 58
Lot No: 7
Symbol: O
Cat No: 29b
Group I, 29b, 1868 (March 2), 15c purple, the earliest recorded use of a Large Queen, used example struck with a partially legible 2 Mar 1868 datestamp, just over a week after the denomination’s official issue date, one of only two examples known from this date; fine and of exceptional importance for an advanced collection or exhibit.
Duckworth records that "of the several Large Queens, the 15 cent value was issued first (22 February, 1868)." He also notes that two stamps are known cancelled on this date, one clearly from Ottawa, the other noted as possibly from the same; they further conclude that "the earliest use known to us is from Ottawa on March 2 (probably to catch the Cunard liner 'Cuba' which departed New York on Wednesday, March 4)."(Image1)

Group II, 29b, 1868 (March 23), 15c purple Large Queen, pre-first day use to England, cover from London, Canada West to London, England, franked with a single 15c (Firth Group I) tied by London C.W. datestamp, paying the 15c per ½oz rate to the United Kingdom via New York, the reverse with Hamilton transit (23 Mar) and London arrival (6 Apr), roughly opened at top and some light ageing, but an exceptionally important early usage, being one of only five recorded covers bearing the 15c Large Queen before 1 April 1868. ex DeVolpi, Firth; with 1982 B.P.A. certificate.
The 15c Large Queen was placed in use ahead of the other denominations to meet the new 15c per ½oz rate to the United Kingdom via New York, which had taken effect on January 16, 1868. Although April 1 is generally regarded as the official first day of use for the Large Queen issue, a small number of 15c stamps were distributed and used earlier. The recorded pre-April 1 covers are dated March 16, March 23 (two examples), March 28 and March 29 1868; off-cover examples are also known dated March 2, 13, 16, and 20.(Image1)

Group V, 29avar, 1874, 15c greyish purple with vertical stitch watermark, discovery example, used single with indistinct datestamp, clearly showing the vertical stitch watermark, being the discovery example for the denomination; our research has identified only one other 15c Large Queen with a vertical stitch watermark, and that example is not from Firth Group V, a couple of shorter perforations, otherwise fine and rare, unrecorded in Duckworth.
Duckworth highlights the rarity of the vertical stitch watermark, noting one survey in which only two examples were found among 2,600 6c Large Queens, while another recorded vertical stitch watermarks on at least one example of the ½c, 1c red brown, 1c yellow, 2c, 3c and 6c denominations. At the time of publication of the second edition of The Large Queen Stamps of Canada and Their Uses in 2008, the variety was therefore unrecorded on the 15c denomination; this example was subsequently identified and exhibited as the discovery copy.(Image1)

Cat No: 30c
Group VIII, 30c, 1880, 15c deep violet on very thick paper, mint hinged, with large part original gum, fresh colour and well centred for this challenging printing, attractive and sound, particularly elusive in unused condition, as examples of this short-lived printing on "carton paper" are frequently encountered with faults, fine and scarce, one of only a small number of recorded unused examples, and one of the most challenging stamps of the Large Queen issue to acquire in sound, unused condition; ex Sir Gawaine Baillie, with 1967 R.P.S.L. certificate.
