Packet Rate Cover to the United States, mailed from Corop / Victoria on OCT.7.1869 to McMinnville Tennessee, via Rochester / Victoria (OCT.7 realist), Melbourne (OCT.8 transit), London (NOV.29 transit) and New York (DEC.11. transit). Franked with two 6d and three 2d Queen Victoria issues, each cancelled by #612” grid numerals, plus “2 / CENTS” and a “5” accountancy markings. Cover has contents reading in part “… I have not received a single line in reply, I sent letters both by the Panama route and the Overland Route by way of England. If you have never received them there is something decidedly wrong in the Mail Service, and to make matters sure I had my letters registered. I also sent a letter by ship last October or Nov. but she was unfortunately wrecked on the Coast of Africa…” and the better goes on, on the same subject for three pages. A good example showing how difficult it could be to mail letters that far in those days (this one took over 2 months). Cover front and back are separated, still very fine and scarce. (Image)
