"RId 7dw" (Newport R.I.) manuscript postmark on 1765 FL discussing an agreement, 1765 folded letter written by Rem I. Remson datelined "New Port Rhode Island Feb. 8 (1765)" with docketing confirming the year date, addressed to Thomas Richie in Philadelphia, letter reads in part, "I wrote you last from New Haven, covering an agreement between Messrs. Adam Babcock & Benedict Arnold & self for a Brig Cargo as part of the contract which hope is got safe to hand…I arrived here a few days ago & immediately delivered the letters to the two houses to whom my brother contracted….I thought it best to have the Brig to call in here from New Haven as I'm informed its not at 5 or 6 days out of her way, & Mr.'s Babcock & Arnold was very pressing with me to go in here. I have wrote them of the above circumstances & also, if it was agreeable to them, I would proceed in her immediately after her arrival here. In the agreement made with Babcock & Arnold, our correspondent with whom they are to settle will be in New York. It may appear something strange to you if it was not explained. The reason is, the above gentleman being very often in New York, chose to have the person hereunto there, altho ??? to get them to agree to settle it with you at Phila" and "PS If Babcock & Arnold should agree to send their vessel in here for me, it will be in 5 or 6 days at the farthest"; very fragile with splitting along folds and wear, Fine, the sale history is noted inside from four sales in the 1960's; ex Sweet and Calvet M. Hahn (with his pencil note that he purchased this cover in one of our 1983 auctions for $700).
