On May 4, 1861, two weeks before North Carolina seceded, Zebulon Baird Vance raised a company of local men known as the Rough and Ready Guards and became their captain. He led his troops in various battles and ran for governor while neither campaigning nor leaving the battlefield. He was in the trenches at Petersburg, Virginia when he learned about the outcome of the election. He resigned his commission and traveled to Raleigh to become governor. He was inaugurated on September 8, 1862 at the age of 32. The war over, Vance was arrested in Statesville on May 13, 1865, his 35th birthday, and he was out as governor as Andrew Johnson appointed someone else. After 47 days in jail, he was paroled and later pardoned by Johnson. He went on to serve as governor again (1877-79), then in the Senate (1879-April 14 1894; his date of death). You can read more about him on his wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebulon_Vance).(Image)
