Feldpostamt 61 (21 Aug), with violet “3. b. Feldkompagnie” handstamp, blue manuscript “Feldpost No: 306” endorsement and “15AUG10” marking, the message densely written in Hungarian and accompanied by a complete English translation, uniform aging, but a fascinating card. Writing at 2 p.m., Awarw reports that three men had deserted to the opposing lines: “A certainty we were betrayed, as three of our own men escaped to them, and we have those men to thank for this awful day... We already have our dead and wounded.” He describes the continuous shelling and its physical and emotional effects: “Granades and shrapnels are showering on us continuously... I have no appetite, my nerves are shot... My head throbs and aches from this excitement and from the colossal explosions,” concluding with hopes for a ceasefire and reunion with his family. (Image)

The contents comprise a public auction notice compiled by the regional Bailiff, John Mantis, acting on behalf of Lawrence Sullivan, Esq, outlining the seizure of goods and chattels ("distrained for Rent") slated for public auction on February 1, 1847. The listed tenant property targeted for liquidation spans several local island farms, including the premises of Henry Moors (Lot 61; distrained for 4 cows, 1 heifer, and 2 sheep), William Moors (1 horse and 1 stack of hay), Jacob Senebaugh (1 horse, 2 cows, 1 steer, 1 heifer, and 2 pigs), Thomas Hicken (1 mare, 1 cow, 2 pigs, and 1 stack of oats), Robert Dixon (1 horse, 3 cows, and 2 heifers), and John Steel (1 horse, 2 cows, and 2 stacks of oats). In a manuscript note to the recipient, James Young, Bailiff Mantis explicitly orders: "Please tear off this & post the above at the X roads immediately and tell every one of them that I shall be there to sell unless they each settle with me by Saturday the 30th inst." Datelined Simon’s Bay, June 28, 1838, the letter documents journey of the 301-ton Fairhaven whaler Sarah Frances and the consular forwarding arrangement. Preparing to sail for the western coast of New Holland, Captain Arthur Cox writes: “I have now got all onboard & shall sail the first wind for the west Coast of New Holland & I hope to obtain a cargo of oil this next season.” He describes the expense of obtaining stores at the Cape and the personal strain of the voyage: “I have got quite home sick & am very anxious to see you & my Dear children…all my wish is to make you & our little family happy & comfortable…this long voyage is no fault of mine.” (Image)

1851 (October 21), Eighth Xhosa War, military cover from Cape Town, signed by Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce shortly before his death in action, envelope marked “Prepaid” at upper left and addressed to George Forbes Esq., signed at lower left by Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce of the 74th (Highland) Regiment, with partially struck double-oval GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE TOWN Crown cachet and with manuscript 1/- packet rate, the reverse with Cape Town despatch (21 Oct) and Edinburgh arrival (22 Dec), likely carried on the General Screw Steam Shipping Co. vessel Propontis, which departed the Cape on the date of postmark, some light wear, else fine. Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce, commanding the 74th Highlanders, had arrived at the Cape in 1851 as part of the British reinforcement effort and was killed in action at the Waterkloof on November 6, 1851, only a little over two weeks after this letter was posted. The 74th played an active role in operations against Xhosa and Khoikhoi forces during the campaign. (Image)
