image 1840 (Aug.12) Penny Black Folded Letter Mailed from Venezuela to England, mailed from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela on JUN.29.1840 (dateline inside) to Halifax, England and arrived in Liverpool on AUG.12.1840 (receiver in red) where it was taken over by a forwarding agent (boxed "FORWARDED BY / WM. ROSS & CO. / LIVERPOOL"), who added a 4-margin (close, to clear on one side) 1p black Queen Victoria imperforate adhesive (Plate 1b, position NH) tied by a red Maltese Cross cancel (same colour as the Liverpool receiver). A rare and desirable use of the Penny Black, in fact we have not found any similar examples except for one incoming from India which received similar treatment and was described at auction as one of three known (from India) and sold for U$9,300. This was the pride and joy of the owner, as it was given to him by a neighbour when he was a child. The neighbour had a family connection to the senders in Venezuela, and this is the first time it appears on the market. (Image)

image 1943 Hong Kong Postage Paid Cover to Canada, Forwarded to England, mailed (with the scarce POSTAGE PAID octagonal handstamp on back) by Arthur Lawrence Powell who had just been a POW at Camp Stanley in Hong Kong to someone working at a Vancouver BC high school (received there on SEP.28.1945), asking her to forward the cover to his wife, who had since moved to England. She then franked it with a 10c and 20c stamp paying the airmail rate to England and it was forwarded on SEP.29.1945. This franking handstamp was used in the short period after HK had resumed mail services on AUG.25.1945 and SEP.25.1945 when postage stamp use resumed. It was mainly reserved for the use of Stanley internment camp prisoners and military personnel. From the same correspondence as the previous lot. (Image)
