image 1842 Folded Letter Mailed England to Canada with Scarce Canadian Exchange Surcharge, written at Metham on MAR.10.1842 (dateline inside) and mailed at Huddersfield on MAR.9.1842 (very fine despatch on back, plus a “PAID / HUDDERSFIELD” oval in red on front) to Chatham, Upper Canada via Liverpool (large SHIP LETTER / LIVERPOOL datestamp plus octagonal datestamp) and New York (APR.17 “SHIP” datestamp in red) and Queenston (APR.21.18 transit on front), very fine. Mounted on a well written-up page explaining the complicated “6% Exchange Surcharge” scheme, which lasted only from MAR.1.1842 to MAY.16.1842. (Image)
