Advanced Collection of Victoria Barred Numeral Cancels on Stamps, #1 to #2109, all neatly sorted and displayed in a thick stockbook. We counted a total of 2,200 different stamps, either by postmark, or stamp issue, as the collector worked on obtaining as many different postmarks on as many different stamps. Throughout the collection are many rare items, postmarks on Kangaroo and KGV stamps, coloured postmarks, a few complete duplex, and much more. The collection was assembled using the 2018 Brusden White "The Barred Numerals of Victoria" publication (offered separately in our literature section) which the owner used to check mark each postmark he owned. A rare offering, with each postmark being the best the collector could find, in terms of clarity and centering, includes many RR and RRR, RRRR (etc.) items, overall fine or better. Comes with a quality set of album pages to display these stamps, prepared by Jérémie Guerra in 2023, with spaces for all the barred numerals, with identification and rarity factors (the owner has started to insert stamps in this, and there are currently 44 stamps in it). Should easily be worth our 50c Canadian per stamp estimate. (Image)

1840 Cape of Good Hope Folded Letter to Great Britain, an 8 page letter written by Mary Maclear, datelined "Observatory, Cape of GH / Feby 16th 1840", then entered the GB mail on APR.29.1840 (red PAID c.d.s.) with "1" red manuscript rate to Lady (Margaret) Herschel at Collingwood House, England. Mary Maclear was the wife of (later knighted) Thomas Maclear, famous astronomer, and Lady Hershel was the wife of Sir John Hershel Bt., also famous astronomer. The letter is thought to have been carried privately from CGH to England, where it entered the post. Pencil notations say it probably travelled per the "London" which arrived Cape Town from Calcutta on Feb.20.1840 then arrived Gravesend on APR.28.1840. The contents describe the life of the Maclear family, who had many children (Hershel herself had 12 children), as well as local politics of CGH. Lady Hershel had accompanied her husband to CGH from 1834 to 1838 as a visiting scientific astronomer, to study and survey the southern sky. Very fine. (Image)
