Lot No: 1061

image 1931 First Woman's Solo Trans-Atlantic Attempt, Crashed in New Brunswick, an airmail envelope with Ruth Nichols (New York) return address on backflap, addressed to Ben Krinsky in New York, with flight cachet at top left reading "First Woman's Solo Transatlantic Attempt / New York to Paris / Lockheed Vega Monoplane / "Akita" NR 496 M / Ruth R. Nichols" alongside a handstamp reading "Plane Crashed At / St. Johns, New Brunswick / June 22, 1931" with pilot's signature below. The (new) American Airmail Catalogue describes this crash in part "she planned to refuel in St John, but on arriving at dusk, she realized that the landing strip was too short for her single-engine Lockheed Vega aircraft. She crash landed the plane, damaging the landing gear and fuselage, and suffered a broken vertebrae." Very fine and very scarce, ideal for any first flight, or crash cover collector. (Image)

The cover is franked with a four margin (close but clear at bottom) 10d blue Jacques Cartier imperforate on thin paper, tied by a rare Hamilton segmented cork cancel, which is a new earliest recorded date for this by one month, as it was previously recorded from 1856-11-24 to 1857-01-21. Hamilton stopped using its 7-ring obliterator in June 1856 and were using this cork in the short period until they received their 4-ring #16 obliterator in March 1857. This appears to possibly be the earliest use of a segmented cancel, likely made of cork in Canada. Very fine and desirable. (Image)
