The obverse features the sixth "Briot's'" bust facing left. The Roman numerals "XII" behind Charles I's head indicate the coin's value: twelve pence or one Shilling. 1820 George III, beautiful gold Sovereign, struck in 1820, showing laureate head of King George III with tighter curls, facing right and St George wearing cape and helmet, mounted on a rearing horse on reverse. England's patron saint holds one half of a broken spear, the other half lies on the ground near a dragon which cowers under the horses hooves. George III died on 20 January1820 but his name and portrait continued to be used on Sovereigns. These gold coins had been introduced in late 1817, taking their name from an older, hammered Tudor coin. Both sides of the first milled Sovereigns were designed by the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. This example is struck in 7.98 grams of 22 carat gold with a 22.05mm diameter and a milled edge. A v.f. and scarce George III Sovereign, minor contact marks (Image)
