image Collection of Original Signatures from European Heads of State and Royalty, in 1938-1940 a collector in New Jersey sent out many requests for signatures on cards, to which he affixed a stamp to the effigy of the person who signed. Of those, he received 22 signatures from Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria, King Boris III of Bulgaria, Prince Louis II of Monaco, President Benes of Czechoslovakia, King Carol of Romania, Crown Prince Michael of Romania, President General Carmona of Portugal (x2), President Raczkiewicz of Poland, President Josef Tiso of Slovak Republic, Admiral Horthy Regent of Hungary, Prince Jean of Luxembourg, Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, Prince Felix of Luxembourg, Prince Paul Regent of Jugoslavia, President Moscicki of Poland, President Lebrun of France, Maréchal Pétain of France, General Gamelin of France, Premier Colijn of the Netherlands, Governor General Vam Starkerborgh Stachouner of the Dutch Indies, President Inonu of Turkey, President Etter of Switzerland and President Pilet-Golaz of Switzerland. Along with the collection are 19 letters of rejection sent from Secretaries or Assistants giving various reasons the signatures could not be provided. One of the letters was sent from the Assistant Private Secretary of the King of Iraq, explaining that King Ghazi I had just met his end in a car accident in April, and that his successor King Faisal II was still too young to sign his name. A fascinating collection, with all signatures shown online, along with a few of the rejection letters as an example. (Image)
