Falkland Islands
Sale No: 795
Lot No: 1188
Symbol: C
Cat No: B

image 1912, cover with Falkland Island stamps used at South Georgia, dated at South Georgia on FE(B) 13 (19)12, franked with two Edward VII 1d stamps with the "South Georgia" imprint applied to the stamps in their lower sheet margins. A rare and attractive cover from this popular area, Very Fine.
Heijtz SGU2b; £700 ($900).

Beginning in 1909, Falkland Island stamps were used at the Grytviken whaling station in South Georgia. The postmaster was furnished with a supply of stamps, a "SOUTH GEORGIA" circular date stamp, and a straight-line "South Georgia" handstamp that was to be struck directly on each letter or card below the stamp (although at times, as in this example, it can be found struck on the stamp itself). The need for the handstamp was discontinued after 1910, although its use for philatelic purposes continued until June of 1912
