General Collections

Sale No: 789
Lot No: 625
Symbol:
Cat No: Collection

image Worldwide, A Lifetime's Massive Treasure Trove, formed by one man's passion for acquisition, rather than collecting, a large grouping housed in over 100 bankers boxes or similar-sized containers with anything from the most modest stamp to rarities. This collector started out buying anything that caught his fancy, and had the resources available to buy collections of any size. He went about his collecting experience in a bit different way, as when he had acquired a collection, he proceeded to take all the stamps off the pages, and carefully bag them in quarter- and full gallon plastic bags organized by country. Anything went into these bags regardless of value. There is no telling what can be found, as the estate was just boxed up as received, the boxes organized by country as much as possible. There are literally hundreds of pounds of stamps here, plus a significant amount still on album pages, considerable stacks of these from a number of areas and countries. It is impossible to give a full picture of what is included here, but we will still make our best attempt. Literally every country is represented and we are giving an overview with the countries in no particular order. Please note that most countries have at least one plastic bag (many times several bags) filled with stamps. Great Britain is well represented including a comprehensive collection through 2006 in a Scott album, dozens of commemorative NH sets, hundreds of covers, another attractive NH/mint collection 1887-1990 in Scott album, binder with NH modern, massive stock on pages, great group of covers. image Great Britain, "Head Hunter" Highly Specialised Machin Head Collection, 1967-99, Since the stamp's debut in 1967, the sculpted profile of QEII, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, has been printed over 200 billion times making it quite simply the most reproduced piece of art in the history of the world. Despite these high numbers, some are actually quite scarce as specialists collect a wide range of varieties far beyond the colours and perforations including printing methods, types, gum & phosphor varieties, etc. This lovely homemade collection on quadrille pages has stamps ranging from the 10½p to 20p, each in a black mount and meticulously identified along with catalogue number referencing the Deegam Handbook. As a bonus, a collection of FDCs for the pre-decimal Machins including the "Stamps for Cooks" booklet along with various se-tenant combinations. image Lundy, "Puffin Crossing" Comprehensive Mint Collection with Collateral, 1929-2010, Although almost everyone is familiar with Lundy and the stamps that made the island famous, very few of us have seen the likes of a lot such as this one. Consulting Labbe's Specialized Guide to Lundy Island Stamps (2009 Edition) or Stamps & Postal History of Lundy Island (6th Edition) by Jon Aitchison, both books of which are included in this lot, everything seems to be here including a lot of very scarce material, such as the Atlantic Coast Air Services issue from 1935, the "1929-1935" and Red Cross overprints on the Puffin issue, or the Tighearna souvenir sheet of 1942 both imperf and perfed with gold overprint. In addition to this collection, numerous covers, a binder of presentation packs from the 1950s until 2006, a stockbook of duplicates, a separate album published by the Lundy Stamp Bureau in 1976, and other publications including books & booklets on the island itself, such as Lundy: Isle of Puffins and Lundy's War: Memories of 1939-1945, as well as many other pamphlets and newspaper clippings.
