We won't go into any more detail, because scans of the entire lot are available on our website, but suffice to say that you're unlikely to ever come across a similar opportunity to purchase such a deep stock of these difficult and popular issues. image France, "Le déluge" Stampless Postal History Collection, ca. 1730-1850s, a simply stupendous accumulation, which hasn't seen the light of day in over half a century, housed in sheet file albums, in boxes, etc., about half well-organized, the other half needing a quick going through; we've not counted everything, but one small box contained 150 items, and our guess is that there is well over 1000 items here in total; sheet files and boxes organized alphabetically by town, with the postmark and date noted in full; the breadth is astounding: four sheet files pre-1792 (several items possibly as early as the 1710s), four sheet files with Gregorian calendar dates, another four with Revolutionary calendar dates, five files post-1815 (plus another three shoeboxes of the same), a post-1832 folder, a "Savoy" folder, a sheet file of Spain (most from Spain to or via France), and boxes and envelopes more; two sheet files of internal Italy items a neat bonus; wonderfully fresh for their age, though of course expect the usual occasional fault; a holding the likes of which you're unlikely to see again, Very Fine overall, inspection richly rewarded. This correspondence includes letters addressed to the Baron de Mériage (1767-1827), among others. As a commoner, he began his professional life as a regular soldier in the pre-revolutionary French Army, later being elevated to the French nobility and rising to the rank of General. During an illustrious military career, while serving as Maréchal de Champ (Sergeant-Major General) in 1812, he was wounded at Krasnoi during the retreat from Moscow and taken prisoner, only returning to France after the Bourbon Restoration in 1815. His last military action was during the French campaign in Spain in 1823, where he served as Major General with the Army of the Pyrenees. The Mériage family married into that of the Count of Montesquiou, a prominent noble. The letters offer some interesting insights from the family's unique social perspective.

image France & Colonies, Mostly Mint Collection with Strong Southeast Asia, 1853-1968, We begin with France in a Scott Specialty album with all stamps in black mounts, mostly used until 1938, then all mint and looks complete after WWII. A bit skimpy in the 19th century, but there is a sound and lightly cancelled #37. Other highlights include mint 253, 264-83, 315-20, 414, 624, 1100 (sheet of 8), B37, B39-40, B42-43, B157a, B285-90, B291a (complete booklet), B294-99, B309a, C22. In addition, a die proof of 1459 and deluxe sheets of 1678 and Reunion 340, but there's a lot more in store here with a second album from Minkus covering the French Colonies of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam also up to 1968 and again with all stamps in black mounts. Except for one blank spot, Laos 103 (maybe it fell out?), all three countries appear to be complete mint, and that includes all the souvenir sheets as well as many extras, like Cambodia 231-33 in imperforate blocks and deluxe sheets, Laos 253-55 also in imperforate blocks and deluxe sheets, and Vietnam 39-50 (imperf), 83-87 (imperf pairs), overprint varieties on 54, and a souvenir booklet of C5-9.
