Cat No: 7
1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing on London paper, original printing flaw discovered by Kimbrough (Scott 7), pane of 100 with wide sheet margins all around, all 100 stamps never hinged, usual unevenly applied o.g. with clear brush strokes (vertical in top 6 rows and horizontal in bottom 4 rows) and natural gum creases, lighter color on pos. 39 & 40 which Kimbrough notes on the invoice "The sheet does have the usual gum creases as expected, but the prominence of the creases is really very much less than what is seen on the average sheet with full gum. Also, there is an area of lighter color involving the stamps at Positions 39 and 40. There is also a light crease in that area as well. On studying this area, I believe that this most likely represents an original printing flaw as the paper looks like it was just a little creased when it was printed; and the slight difference in color is most likely caused by underinking that part of the plate. Just another indication that this is a Richmond printing as such things would never have been tolerated at De La Rue & Co. I hope you like it." small adherence in selvage to right of pos. 100, Extremely Fine. Kimbrough writes, "These stamps represent an early Richmond Printing from the De La Rue plates and can easily be mistaken for CSA #6. The stamps are distinguished by the somewhat fuzzy quality of the printing best seen on the stamps of the bottom row using a magnifier. Also, many of the stamps have the small dark dots (plate flaws) which would never have been tolerated on the De La Rue printings. The sheet is fully gummed with the somewhat thick and yellowish Richmond gum rather than the thin and colorless London gum.", with Feb. 1997 letter and invoice from John Kimbrough to the consignor (imaged online). Scott $2,200 as singles. (Image)
