1863, 10¢ blue, Die A (Scott 11), three very large margins to just into at top, tied by strong strike of "Charleston S.C. Mar. 3, 1864" circular datestamp on tiny cover to former South Carolina Governor Hon. R.F.W. Moody (blockaders), the address side has been overwritten by an intriguing numbered list mentioning many Confederate officers by name including Lieut Webb who "went to hospital…sent to Georgetown thence by the …. sent up in a cart to Chicora where he was attended by Dr. Sparkman & never got out of his bed - was frequently out his head." the cover must be 1864 because the stamp was first issued April 21 1863 and the Chicora was destroyed by the CSA on Feb. 18, 1865, furthermore, the recipient, a plantation owner and politician, died a month later on 7 Apr 1864 at the age of 62 (see his wikipedia page for more info), Very Fine, ex Randy Neil, signed Trish Kaufmann. Rowzee, Salisbury NC with original letter in very faded pencil written by Confederate Naval physician Claudius W. Rowzee that reads, "… I am here in Petersburg out of all danger. Our Reg't is between here & Richmond & I learn that it is cut all to pieces. I saw several of the wounded from our co. this morning & they say that there is not more than 15 left here. They left some sick men in camp, & some 3 or 4 days ago they sent for them or at least all that were able to come to the Reg't. We all started but were stopped in town to guard several hundred Yankee prisoners just brought in. We are guarding them now….The Surgeon, who has the charge of the Yankees & our sick left yesterday & left me in charge of the sick, although I have not rec'd my appointment yet….You may be certain of one thing and that is that I am not going to be killed this war if I can help it…There has been awful fighting above here & I can hear the cannon roaring as I write & sometimes the small arms. Our troops are victorious. The Yankee day is about setting. The yankee prisoners say that our men fight more like devils than men. no set of troops were ever more determined to conquer or die than our men. They are tied of the war & want to settle it at once, to fight it out and be done with it.", Extremely Fine, The sender enlisted as a private in the NC 8th Infantry, was captured on Feb. 8 1862 and exchanged 6 months later; he eventually became Surgeon Steward of the CSS Albermarle, accompanied by typed transcription of the letter, ex Randy Neil, signed Trish Kaufmann.
