Blockade Covers
Sale No: 5009
Lot No: 708
Symbol:
image Outgoing Blockade Adversity Cover to England. Made from a printed court document, from the Grimball correspondence addressed to Mr. John Grimball, care of Frasier Trenholm & Co., Liverpool England, no postal markings as this was probably sent under cover in a larger package, Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Lieutenant John Grimball's early career included service on the C.S.S. "Arkansas", an ironclad operating near Vicksburg and reputed to be the most feared ship of the C.S. Navy. The Arkansas ran aground and was burned by the crew. Lt. Grimball was assigned to service abroad on Jan. 6, 1864, and this was probably sent by Grimball from England on Feb. 17, 1864. He was appointed to the famed C.S.S. "Shenandoah" on Oct. 8, 1864. The Shenandoah's exploits continued months after the end of the war, as she captured whalers for prize. Lt. Grimball was present when the first and last shots of the war were fired. This correspondence has been extensively researched.

At the start of the American Civil War, he sided with the Confederacy, was commissioned lieutenant colonel, promoted to brigadier general and major general. He served in the Eastern Theater and commanded the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. He was transferred to the Western Theater and commanded a division in the Army of Tennessee during the attempt to relieve the Siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta campaign and the Franklin-Nashville campaign.
