Cat No: Antietam
Antietam (1937) PCGS MS64. Monochrome golden-brown toning on perfectly original surfaces. One of the scarcer and more-popular classic commemoratives, the Antietam depicts Civil War generals George B. McClellan and Robert E. Lee both commanding armies that would meet in a very bloody encounter (23,000 casualties) on Sept 17th 1862, near northern Virginia's Burnside Bridge shown on the opposite side. There is some debate among numismatists which side is the obv and which is the rev. The side showing the generals is usually considered the obverse, but since the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" are also on this side, a strong case can be made for it actually being the reverse. (This same controversy exists for several of the other classic commemoratives as well. Wouldn't it be nice if these were the only things we had to fight about.) (Image)
