Estimate; $150 - 200.

This letter would have landed at Port Royal and put onto one of the supply ships sailing north. It probably went on to Fortress Monroe in a closed bag on it's way to Baltimore. It was there that the postage "Due 3" marking was applied on it's way to Salem.

The "Emma" was captured on July 24th, 1863 by the Army transport SS "Arago" off the coast of Wilmington, N.C. and was purchased by the Navy from the New York City prize court on September 30th, 1863. "Emma" arrived at Newport News, Va. in November of 1863 to patrol with the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron until the end of the war.
