Partial letter and sketches written by Confederate Soldier Ransom L. Eudy addressed to his nephew Adam Jackson Eudy.
Ruled paper measuring approximately 7 1/4 by 4 inches, with a hand-drawn and hand-colored depiction of an unidentified regimental flag in red and blue, including a cannon, spear, and glove. File folds with a bit of separation. On front and back is written,
“made by R. Ludy (?) for aDam Jackson udy (?) and when he git hit he tell him that his uncle Rance made hit for him Ransom Ludy (?) Adam jackson udy (?) / April the 25 Saturday eavning I am not rite well and I will make this to pleez the children.”
The letter is written by Ransom E. Eudy (possibly Endy) of North Carolina, who signs himself "Uncle Rance" (Ransom) and addresses the drawing to his nephew, Adam Jackson Eudy.

Wheeler, New Ipswich, New Hampshire. Written by a soldier of the 6th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, then stationed at Newport News, Virginia, February 11 through March 26, 1863. Writer was attached to the Commissary Department, likely assigned by the regiment, and speaks of gathering cattle, baking bread, and related duties. The regiment moved west in late March 1863. The cover is datestamped 18 days after the firing on Fort Sumter and one month before the Confederate States Post Office Department assumed responsibility for mail service on June 1, 1861. “On November 15, 1860, Governor John Letcher called for a Special Session of the General Assembly to consider secession. On January 7, 1861, the legislature authorized a Secession Convention to convene on February 13 in Richmond. On April 17, the convention adopted an Ordinance of Secession on condition of ratification by a statewide referendum. The voters overwhelmingly approved the measure on May 23 thus ratifying the terms stipulating the effective date of secession as of April 17, 1861. Virginia was admitted to the Confederacy on May 7.”
