Eagle Carrier, LO2, 1c Blue, Tied by Red Fingerprint Cancel with Red Philadelphia "PAID" Integral Datestamp and Manuscript "PAID" on 1857 Folded Letter to Easton, Pennsylvania Unusual Usage with Postage Prepaid in Cash and Carrier Fee Prepaid by the Eagle Carrier Stamp
Stamp tied by a red fingerprint cancel on a folded letter addressed to Easton, Pennsylvania. Red Philadelphia "PAID 3 Dec 4" integral circular datestamp and a manuscript "Paid". Cover with a split vertical fold and backflap missing.
The unusual handling reflects a sender who affixed the Carrier stamp intending to deposit the letter in a post box but instead handed it to a carrier along with 3c in cash to prepay postage. The carrier wrote "Paid" in manuscript and delivered the letter to the post office, where the clerk applied the red Philadelphia "PAID" datestamp and used the same red ink to cancel the Carrier stamp with his thumbprint. Had the cover been prepaid by a 3c stamp or sent unpaid, it would not have received this distinctive treatment. Certificate:Click Here to View Certificate(Image)

Eagle Carrier, LO2, 1c Blue, Cut to Shape, Used on Backflap of 1852 Cover with Four Margin #11a 3c Brownish-Carmine, Position 94R1L, Tied on Front A Highly Unusual Usage of the Eagle Carrier as a Letter Seal
The Eagle Carrier, cut to shape, affixed to the backflap of a small cover and serving as a letter seal rather than as prepayment of carrier service. The front with a 3c in a rich brownish-carmine shade with magnificent four margins from plate position 94R1L, tied by a blue Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circular datestamp, addressed to Delafield, Wisconsin.
The Eagle Carrier was torn in two when the envelope was opened but remains intact on the backflap. The 3c stamp prepays the standard interstate letter rate to Wisconsin. A note by Dr. Chase opines that the Carrier was used as a seal but nonetheless "carried the letter to the mails," representing a highly unusual application of the Eagle Carrier outside its intended postal function.
