Cat No: QAE2
1765, 3d America Embossed Revenue stamp, Die B, on full sheet of laid paper showing a clear papermaker’s Lion watermark, with a trace of writing transferred from a document originally placed beneath, the stamp displaying crisp embossing and well clear of the sheet's minor edge discolouration, an extremely elusive on-document example, with Zaluski recording only five examples of the 3d in private hands including cut squares, undercatalogued in our opinion given its tremendous rarity, representing an exceptionally desirable item for an advanced collection, very fine with outstanding historical resonance.
Issued under Britain’s 1765 Stamp Act, such embossed revenue stamps became a potent symbol of imperial taxation without representation, provoking widespread colonial resistance. The opposition they generated helped ignite the political crisis that culminated in the American Revolution, lending this stamp exceptional importance well beyond its rarity.(Image1)
