Cat No: QAE2

image 1765, 3d America Embossed Revenue stamp, Die B, on full sheet of laid paper showing a clear papermaker’s Lion watermark, with a trace of writing transferred from a document originally placed beneath, the stamp displaying crisp embossing and well clear of the sheet's minor edge discolouration, an extremely elusive on-document example, with Zaluski recording only five examples of the 3d in private hands including cut squares, undercatalogued in our opinion given its tremendous rarity, representing an exceptionally desirable item for an advanced collection, very fine with outstanding historical resonance.

Issued under Britain’s 1765 Stamp Act, such embossed revenue stamps became a potent symbol of imperial taxation without representation, provoking widespread colonial resistance. The opposition they generated helped ignite the political crisis that culminated in the American Revolution, lending this stamp exceptional importance well beyond its rarity. (Image1)

image 1765, 2sh6d America Embossed Revenue stamp, Die A, cut square in bluish-grey, with clear detail and strong impression, with George III "GR" cypher label on reverse, cut well clear of embossing, a lovely example of this rare and desirable revenue; required by Great Britain's Stamp Act of 1765, these stamps sparked the intense "no taxation without representation" protests that led to its repeal and fueled the American Revolution.
