image 1851, 1¢ blue, type Ib. Position 6R1E, no gum, large margins to just shaving outer tips of ornaments at bottom, deep color & sharp impression, Post Office fresh, Extremely Fine and choice.
Scott No. 5A var.; $18,000.

ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY RARE 1851 1¢ BLUE, TYPE IB - A STUNNING GEM.

Type Ib was issued only in imperforate form. Just six positions on Plate 1 Early - 3R, 4R, 5R, 6R, 8R, and 9R - produced stamps classified as Type Ib, identified by a complete design at the top and an almost complete design at the bottom. When originally entered onto the plate, these six positions (along with 7R1E) showed full designs at both top and bottom; however, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottom design were later burnished away. Among the Type Ib positions, 6R and 8R retain more of the bottom detail than the others, making them especially desirable examples of the type.

image 1851, 1¢ blue, type III. Position 70R4, showing a full break at top and wide break at bottom, light free free town cancels, large to mostly huge margins showing portions of the "Toppan Carpenter" imprint captured in upper right margin, beautiful deep rich color, Superb, one of only three examples to obtain this lofty grade with two examples higher (both are 98J), ex-Vogel, "Natalee Grace", Curtis & Myerson, with 2011 P.F. for pair and 2012 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (Superb 98, SMQ $21,000). Scott No. 8; $1,650.

A MAGNIFICENT JUMBO MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 1¢ TYPE III ISSUE BEARING A VERY RARE MARGINAL IMPRINT - WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES EXTANT.

Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) has small breaks in at least one line. This example with full and wide breaks is one of the finer positions of this type.

Scott No. 9 var.; $10,000.

ONE OF THE FINER OF THE APPROXIMATELY 19 KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE 1¢ WITH CHICAGO PERFORATIONS - OF THESE ONLY THREE SINGLES AND THE UNIQUE STRIP OF THREE ARE TYPE IV.

The origin of the Chicago perforation was documented by Jerome S. Wagshal in Chronicle 130 (May 1986), where he explained that the perforating machine responsible for the Chicago Perf stamps was invented by Dr. Elijah W. Hadley, a Chicago dentist who likely built it in 1854. The distinctive 12½-gauge perforation was applied to sheets of the 1¢ (Plates 1 Late and 2) and the 3¢ 1851 Issue, with the 1¢ being considerably rarer; according to a census compiled by W. Wilson Hulme II and published in Chronicle 175 (August 1997).

A RARE 1851 ISSUE TRANSATLANTIC USE TO ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA PAYING THE SCARCE 37¢ PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL RATE.

William Louis Winans was a noted railway pioneer, who traveled to Russia in 1843 as part of a $3 million contract to supply railroad locomotives and cars for the new railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow. From 1852, William was the chief manager of the Russian operation, which had a lucrative contract as it was reported their contracted fees were 17 times higher than in any other country in Europe. During the Crimean War the firm's operations expanded, and Winans acted as the U.S. vice-consul in St. Petersburg. The contract expired in 1862.

(Siegel Sale #829, Lot 368). It is interesting to note that only two original gum examples have been graded by the P.S.E., this stamp and one other (85 J).
