Outstanding Collection of Signed General William Ambrose "Burnside" Senate Mourning Letters and Cover, This 1879 mourning cover as well as three mourning letters are sent from Ambrose Burnside, famed Union Civil War General and U.S. Senator from Rhode Island. This mourning cover was sent during his tenure as a Senator and features the United States Senate postal cancel and Washington D.C. Congressional cancel as well. The letter was written to General John C. Robinson - another famed Union general. It appears that all of these items were written by Burnside and are appropriately signed by him on separate occassions. This is a magnificent collection of personal correspondence that are seldom seen from such a notable figure of the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. These items have not been authenticated by a third party. They are being sold as-is as a group and are not subject to return. We make every attempt to offer original signatures but in group lots we encourage the buyer to use their judgment. (Image)

Cat No: dewey george
George Dewey, framed 1898 handwritten signed letter, on two statement sized pages with "Flagship Olympia" letterhead and datelined "Manila P.I. Nov. 11, 1898" that reads, "Mr. Charles E. Gantz, Dear Sir, I beg to acknowledge the receipt of, and to thank you for, your letter enclosing copies of lines written by you. The lines are very well written and have interested me very much. With kindest regards, Yours sincerely, George Dewey." with magenta image of Dewey in eagle and flag and five star design at left, frame measures 20½ x 16½ inches with a tiny piece of the glass out in bottom right corner (would be best to ship without the glass and frame to save on cost and high risk of glass shattering), Dewey's letter was written only six months after his fleet reached Manila Bay and defeated the Spanish. By March 1899, Dewey became the only person to be promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Navy. The recipient, Charles E. Gratz, worked at the Albany NY Journal for approximately 55 years, beginning as a route boy in 1857 at the age of 10 and eventually worked his way up to business manager, the position he held just prior to his death in 1915 at the age of 67. The only years he did not work at the Journal were his early years and his service during the Civil War as a member of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery, Co. B, participating in all the engagements of his regiment including SpottsylvanIa, Cold Harbor, before Petersburg and Strawberry Plains. His writings were pungent and he contributed frequently to other newspapers and magazines at that time and after he transferred his field of labor to the business office of the paper. He also wrote much topical verse which appeared frequently in the humorous periodicals., ex J. Leonard Diamond. This item has been previewed by our expert team and we believe this item is genuine and will receive a certificate stating the same.
