United States, Recovery of 1st American astronaut 1961, cancelled on the Prime Recovery Ship (PRS) USS Lake Champlain during operations to rescue the first American astronaut to fly; prior to Space Shuttle landings on runways, US Navy task forces might have dozens of ships assigned to a spacecraft recovery, yet one one would be designated as the Prime Recovery Ship; sent by a Marine onboard the aircraft carrier, it represents one of very few with dots following the letters "USS"; even the more common cancel has a census of about 50 examples, this being far more scarce, Fine to Very Fine, less than 20 reported.(Image)
