19th Century Issues
Sale No: 820
Lot No: 3101
Symbol: */o/C
Cat No: 1871

image Specialized 1871-75 Tiger's Head Issues Collection, an outstanding specialist's collection presented on both well-annotated exhibit-type pages and on 3-row stock pages. The 1871 first issues, dated "1288," comprised approximately 21 nearly all used and cut examples, but all are plated and presented to facilitate identification. The 1872-73 issues, equally substantial, include some choice mint examples, such as pairs, a strip of three, and a corner missing ornament. Issues in this series are also plated and identified for collector convenience. Subsequent color changes offer similar coverage, and approximately eleven covers with plated and identified frankings—singles, pairs, and combination—accompany. Plenty more to the collection of these classic issues, the likes of which are rarely offered in today's market, fully imaged online. Shipping charges apply - weight 0.8 lbs. Lot No: 3104

Cat No: 1907-196

image 1907 Imperforate Habibullah Issue Collection (Scott 196-199), a grand and extensive collection of the issue in a binder, with most mounted on exhibition pages, with the balance of the stamps and covers present but awaiting proper mounting on the pages. It all begins with a rare "forerunner" Revenue stamp with design and production similar to the definitive issue. It continues with a remarkably detailed treatment of the shades, position pieces including gutters, scarce watermarked examples, multiples, a wide range of cancels, and errors such as printed on both sides or double impressions, etc. The 2ab value (#198) features many blocks of six or larger, including five full sheets of 18. Meanwhile, some pairs, such as a tête-bêche gutter pair and a block of four, highlight the scarcer 1rup value. An intriguing lineup of covers is accompanied by an impressive array of cancels, including strong strikes from various locales in black, violet, red, purple, and more. An exceptional study, fully imaged online. (Video for this lot) (Image)

Cat No: 1907-200

image 1907 1ab and 2ab Habibullah Issue, Zigzag and Serrate Roulette Perforation Experiments Exhibit Collection (Scott 200//201B), an impressive collection of these fascinating issues, incorporating several of the world's rarest stamps, all on exhibit pages, though not all are mounted. The 1907 zigzag roulette 10 begins the awe-inspiring collection, including mint examples of both the 1ab and 2ab values, with the 1ab being one of just two known examples and ex-Dietrich. Additionally, two of the three known examples of the 2ab value are displayed. The Scott value of just these three stamps is $7,750, quite conservative considering their rarity. The 1908 serrate roulettes feature the only two known examples of the 2ab Blue (#201B, both ex-Perkal), catalogued at $7,000. The used section features eight examples by shade of the 1ab zigzag (#200, cat. value $3,200), plus two examples of the 2ab value (#201B, unpriced). Other items of interest include a 1936 forgery with accompanying "certificate" sent by dealer Zahid to Col. Lawrence Smith, the original owner of the 1ab zigzag, stating that "it is genuine". Also includes additional used examples of the 1ab zigzag, as well as three rare examples (of the four known) of the 1ab Green serrate roulette on covers (ex-Maj. Hopkins; Scott $1,250 each for on cover). A unique and stunning collection and, safe to say, impossible to duplicate, fully imaged online. (Video for this lot) (Image)

image 1916-19 Definitives Issue Exhibit Collection (Scott 206-207, 208C, 211), at first blush, you may wonder why these issues were separated from the "set" listed in Scott and the other major catalogs. The answer is readily apparent through a review and study of this exquisitely presented collection organized into 29 exhibit-type pages, all contained within a single binder. Within, we note a broad range of shades, perforation and watermark varieties, a cancellation study, different papers, plate flaws, sheets, and large multiples, among other features. image Magnificent Study of the 1939 Airmail Set and its 1948 Reissue (Scott C1-C3), an extraordinary, scholarly, researched, and annotated collection completely covering the issue, all displayed on 40 exhibit pages. The initial issue study begins with a set of rare UPU "AMOSTRA" Specimen overprints, followed by subsequent sections on perforation analysis, imperforates, color changes, and other related topics. Notable are two complete sets of sheets of #C1-C3, identified reference forgeries, imperforates, minor size and design flaws. The later 1940-47 printings are represented by additional shade and perforation varieties, sheets of the 10af and 20af values, scarce imperforate margin pairs (only 1,000 sets issued), along with imperforate horizontal pair single frankings on three Airmail covers addressed to "Mr. Lazar" or "Centenary Stamp Co" in NY City. The 1948 issue in singles (each signed Kessler) and in imperforate blocks (each signed Sanabria). The end section showcases a variety of uses on 28 covers, including rate studies, destinations, censors, Registry, and advertising, among others. Highlights include 1941 censored to Switzerland, numerous Registered to the USA, 1949 to China, etc., plus a scarce 1950 manuscript cancelled example registered to Austria. Some items are not yet mounted on their respective pages, but it is still an overall splendid study of this Airmail issue, fully imaged online. (Video for this lot) (Image)

image 1909-27 First Issue Official Exhibition Collection (Scott O1), an exceptional and well-researched study of the first Official issue is thoroughly annotated on 25 exhibit pages. Although it's an exploration of just a single stamp, the exhibit is a real page-turner, showcasing a terrific analysis of the various shades and papers encountered over its 18-year life. Replete with multiples, including no less than seven complete sheets, each of which was selected to show multiple printing differences. Following a rare imperforate between pair are 18 elusive uses on cover ranging from early (1910) to later (1921) uses, combination frankings, etc., highlighted by a stunning 1919 linen envelope from Muhammed Dhafar, ruler of Noor at Queen's Court in exile, and posted during the third Anglo-Afghan War (May-August, 1919). An unparalleled study of this issue, sure to please the Afghan enthusiast, fully imaged online. (Video for this lot) (Image)

image 1909-18 The First Habibullah Parcel Post Issues Collection (Scott Q1-Q10), an incomparable collection, often mounted on exhibit pages with the owner's updated exhibition pages included to reflect new acquisitions or information, and highly specialized throughout with highlights galore, including (in no particular order) a very rare two-stamp franking on parcel front (very few of which have survived, according to Patterson). Also noted are many complete sheets, including #Q1, Q3 (2 shades), Q6, Q7 (3 shades), Q9 (2 shades), plus the rare imperforate sheets #Q1a and Q2a (2). Numerous multiples present with #Q9 left margin block of ten horizontally imperforate. Undoubtedly, the crown jewels of this fabulous collection are the two illustrated and footnoted items shown in the Scott catalog between the 1909 and 1916 sets. It describes an undenominated Official Parcel Post stamp prepared, but not issued, of two types, of which a "pair, imperforate between" and "a complete sheet of two…perforated on all sides" are known. Remarkably, both of these world-class rarities are included in the collection—a monumental achievement by the collector, and an exhibit ready for further expansion, fully imaged online.
