1903 (Jan. 19) Post Office official registered penalty envelope (285 x 132mm.) from Washington, D.C. to Hartman, New York (1.22), via Albany (1.20) bearing "U.S. Registered Package/Post-Office Department, Postage Stamp Agency" large red on yellow label, canceled by "Washington, D.C./Registered" double-ring datestamp in violet, the envelope hand-stamped "This contains/50 books 12 stamps each./10 books 24 stamps each./2 ct. stamps." unframed handstamp in violet, and on reverse Post Office Seal rose and black with signature of Edwin C. Madden (#OXF14), Fine to Very Fine, a marvelous and probably unique surviving collateral item. (Image)
