1431 imageGB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY - 1789 (20 Aug) letter from 'Honest' Daniel Braithwaite (the controller of the Post Office Foreign Department) to Lord Walsingham. Lord Walsingham, the Postmaster General had asked Braithwaite about the number of 'Lordships' he would introduce into a single letter. In the present one there are three. Braithwaite advises Walsingham that he has forwarded his letter to 'Mr. Todd' (Anthony Todd, secretary to the Post Office), who cannot come to Town following the death of Lord Lauderdale. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY - 1789 (5 Oct) letter from the Comptroller General of the Post Office, John Palmer (instigator of the British system of Mail Coaches), to the Postmaster General, Thomas de Grey, 2nd. Baron Walsingham. A fascinating personal letter commenting on his wife's illness and his children's education. Note: On 11 September 1789 Palmer was appointed surveyor and comptroller-general with a salary of £1,500 a year, his 2½% commission on the nett profit took effect on all revenue of the Post Office over £240,000. An exceptionally rare and important letter from this Postal Reformer. Cumberland at Tunbridge-Wells, to the Postmaster General, Lord Walsingham, asking for the removal of the current postmaster, Mr. Jasper Sprange, to be replaced by William Knight, and giving, in some detail, his reasons including 'Mr Jasper Sprange, our Bookseller & Stationer, is our present postmaster. I have reason to believe his affairs are so circumstanc'd as to render it little likely that he can hold his employ...'. From the Herbert Joyce family archive. Joyce was the third secretary of the Post Office and in his 'The History of the Post Office' mentions James Sprange, the courtly old Postmaster, who up to the date of his last illness might be seen pacing the Pantiles scrupulously dressed in the costume of the reign of George the second, even to the long ruffles'. Freeling writes a six page letter about a meeting he had with Mark Peacock, solicitor to the post office, concerning a bankrupt called Austin. He tells his father, 'It was a long business, I have bored you with a long statement which after all may be scarcely intelligible.' 1438 imageGB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY - 1834 (20 Mar) letter from Francis Philips to the surveyor and superintendent of Mail Coaches, Charles Johnson. Francis Philips (1771-1850), a wealthy landowner and skilled road builder had built a new bridge over the Mersey, with eleven arches, an interesting letter includes 'I request the favour of your perusal of a pamphlet that I have been driven I may almost say by the very injudicious recommendation of the Lords committee on roads to publish in defence of Turnpike securities…'. Interestingly Johnson had been alongside the Prime Minister, Spencer Percival on 11 May 1812 when he was shot and soon after he died in Francis' arms. The Post Office cannot undertake the safe transmission of valuable enclosures (Coins, &c.), in unregistered letters. So sent, they are exposed to serious risk, but when registered they are practically safe. / The fee for registration on Inland letters has reduced from 6d to 4d. General Post Office, December, 1863.' Rare, and in nice condition.

1440 imageGB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY - 1884 POSTAL STRIKES. 1884 (27 Nov, 5 Dec) two letters on embossed Treasury stationery from Ralph Lingen, 1st. Baron LIngen, to George Lefevre, 1st. Baron Eversley both concerning Postal strikes, with interesting contents including in the first '..I wish you would consider the feasibility of employing Military Pensioners, or even men of the reserve, as letter carriers.' 'We have more than once been threatened with strikes in the great commercial centres,' later 'In making any such proposals as these, the military authorities would have to be previously consulted. In all such schemes, I have found them ready enough for any promises that may tempt men to enlist, but sensitive on the side of tempting the best men out of the service. A reserve man could be kept in training by carrying letters: I never remember to have seen a corpulent postman'. The second letter also included 3 additional confidential letters from the London & North Western Railway.
