Long Island - Laid Paper Issue (SG 7-22) continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
180   ImageLONG ISLAND, 1916, 6p Black on Thin Horizontally Laid Paper, Without Red Ink Initials (SG 17b). Top left corner sheet margin single, unnumbered plate, pos. 1, tied on piece by manuscript red crayon "S 16 MY 16" circular datestamp of Nikola, some soiling mostly in margin

FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 6-PENCE BLACK ON LAID PAPER WITHOUT RED INK INITIAL. A MAJOR LONG ISLAND RARITY AND KEY ERROR TO ACQUIRE.

This is the only example in private hands from the unnumbered plate and the only example without the red ink initial. A carbon copy of this example, also without red initials, is part of a block of four in the Royal Collection. Only one sheet of 20 was printed of the 6p Black plus this example here. Records show thirteen examples were destroyed. It is unknown whether that includes the 6p Mauve or other examples from this unnumbered plate.

Ex "Mountrobeck". SG £6,500 (Image)

182   ImageLONG ISLAND, 1916, 6p Mauve on Thin Horizontally Laid Paper (SG 19). Top left corner plate no. 1 sheet margin single, pos. 1, affixed to small piece and with manuscript red crayon "S 16 MY 16" circular datestamp of Nikola, minor soiling

FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 6-PENCE MAUVE ON LAID PAPER, SG NO. 19. ONLY 60 EXAMPLES TOTAL PRINTED. AN IMPORTANT LONG ISLAND RARITY.

A total of 60 examples was printed with no remainders destroyed. Gibbs records sixteen unused and this used example. In our opinion, the Stanley Gibbons price is severely undervalued compared to the unused price (£1,600).

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A REMARKABLY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-SHILLING BLUE ON LAID PAPER. OF THE 40 ORIGINALLY PRINTED, GIBBS RECORDS ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Only 40 examples were printed and no remainders destroyed. Of those, Gibbs records only six unused examples with one institutionalized in the Royal Collection. There are no used examples recorded. A great Long Island rarity and first example we have offered since keeping computerized records.
