5¢ Red Brown (1), ample to large margins, beautiful First Printing shade and impression, tied by blue grid cancel on blue folded letter datelined "Utica Oct. 19, 1847" to Governor's Island, New York City, and returned to Utica, New York, from a father to his son, Henry Green Jr., the absence of a Utica datestamp suggests this might have been carried outside the mails and put into the New York City post office as a drop letter, red "New-York 2cts Oct. 25" (1847) integral drop-rate circular datestamp, manuscript "Gone to Mexico", indicating Henry Jr. had left with his regiment, "To Miss M. Green, Utica N.Y." in the same hand, red "FORWARDED" straightline handstamp and matching "New-York Oct. 28" circular datestamp, blue manuscript "5" above the "2" rate and totaled to "7" due, presumably the Utica post office collected the 7¢ due and cancelled the stamp with their blue grid (New York City did not use a blue grid), stamp with small horizontal crease, Very Fine, a remarkable 1847 Issue cover with a rare auxiliary marking and interesting U.S.-Mexican War connection, ex Pope, Rose, Craveri and Hackmey, with 2005 P.F. certificate (Image)

5¢ Red Brown (1), large margins, tied by manuscript and blue "Philada Pa. 10 Sep. 25" (1849) integral-rate circular datestamp on blue folded cover addressed to Jacob Dunnell & Co. in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, this was not the location of the addressee so the postmaster re-cancelled stamp with "Portsmouth N.H. Oct. 2" circular datestamp and forwarded it to Portsmouth, Virginia, addressee was not there either so the cover was forwarded again with "Portsmouth Va. Oct. 8" circular datestamp to Portsmouth, Ohio--no luck there either, so the Ohio postmaster forwarded it one more time with "Portsmouth O. Oct. 16" circular datestamp to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where it found Jacob Dunnell & Co.--no other forwarding markings, although the 1851 Post Office Directory lists Portsmouths in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, so it missed traveling to those two--all markings struck in blue and no evidence of forwarding postage charged (or even the 5¢ deficiency for its first destination to New Hampshire), an extraordinary cover which is surely unique for the 1847 Issue, ex Dick, Garrett and Boker, written up by Stanley B.
