United States Stamps, Featuring Inverted Jenny Position 49 continued...

1908-10 Washington-Franklin Issues (Scott 331-356)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
412   Image2c Carmine, Foreign Entry of 1c Design (332 var). Deep rich color, bold strike of duplex cancel, tiny corner perf crease at bottom left, Fine appearance, scarce, only one position -- the fourth position under the plate no. on the upper left pane of Plate 5299 -- yields this interesting variety, it is believed to have been created when a 1c transfer roll was erroneously used to enter this position on the 2c plate, when it was discovered prior to printing, the design was burnished away and corrected with a 2c entry, some elements of the 1c design remained and are identifiable, with 2011 P.F. certificate (Image)

414° ogbl Image$1.00 Violet Brown (342). Bottom imprint and plate no. 4957 block of six, lightly hinged with bottom right stamp Mint N.H., rich color, beautifully centered

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND VERY CHOICE PLATE BLOCK OF THE $1.00 WASHINGTON 1908 ISSUE.

Excluding the Bluish Paper Issue, this is one of the rarest of the Washington-Franklin plate blocks. Lewis Kaufman records only seven top and four bottom plate blocks. The Bureau experienced difficulty with paper shrinkage while printing the 1908 Issue, and the Bluish Paper experiment of 1909 was part of an effort to correct the problem. The 1908 high-denomination stamps are difficult to find well-centered, and plate blocks are extremely rare in higher grades. This is the best centered sound plate block of this issue we have offered since keeping computerized records more than 25 years ago.

With 2018 P.S.E. certificate. Pencil Scott No. notation in selvage (Image)
