VERY FINE. A CHOICE AND DESIRABLE HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE” COVER WITH THE 1866 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA V AND UNITED STATES 10-CENT 1861 ISSUE MIXED FRANKING.
This was carried on the Idaho, which departed Honolulu Oct. 5, 1868, and arrived in San Francisco Oct. 18. According to the Gregory book, this was the last regular North Pacific Transportation Company sailing to use the Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid” marking.
During the contract steamer period, mail addressed to the U.S. was charged 5c Hawaiian and 10c U.S. postage, regardless of destination. As such, lower rates to San Francisco no longer applied. The Hawaiian Steam Service” oval was applied regularly to contract steamship mail from November 1867 to August 1869.
Gregory Census no. 45. Illustrated in Gregory (Vol. 3, p. 75). With 1978 H.P.S. and 1979 Friedl certificates. Scott Retail as No. 32 on cover with any stamp of 1861-68 Issue is $5,000.00 (Image)
VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL OF THE HAWAII PROVISIONAL OVERPRINT VARIETIES. THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE, SHOWING THE ENTIRE VERTICAL ROW OF THE SHEET WITH THE ADDITIONAL OVERPRINT IN BOTTOM SELVAGE, IS A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE.
This error was caused by the overprint form and paper being significantly misaligned (form shifted downward) while printing. The overprint at the top of each normal stamp was intended to appear on the stamp above it. This is confirmed by the accompanying bottom part imprint strip of five, which shows an extra overprint completely in the selvage below. This digital reconstruction shows the two strips reunited, though they can be mounted side-by-side on an exhibit page.
Ex Honolulu Advertiser. With 1996 P.F. certificate as the old Scott 55a and not mentioning the rejoining between the second and third stamps (Image)
FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF THE 12-CENT 1893 PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH TWO SHOWING DOUBLE RED OVERPRINTS.
Only two sheets were doubly overprinted. This block with two examples, plus two stamps showing a small portion of a second overprint, is extremely rare.
With 1969 P.F. certificate (as old No. 62a). Scott Retail as two Category I errors (Image)
