Postmasters’ Provisionals
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1332 c ImageNew Orleans La., 5c Red Brown on Bluish (62X4). Large to ample margins including portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, intense shade, tied by clear strike of "PD 5 CTS/N.O.P.O." two-line provisional handstamp with "J. L. Sep. 23" circular datestamp, manuscript "Lafourche" steamboat identification at lower left, slightly reduced at right, tiny paper addition at top right corner where stamp has light corner crease

VERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE NEW ORLEANS PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP TO CANCEL THE 5-CENT PROVISIONAL STAMP. ONLY FOUR OF THE 12 TO 15 EXAMPLES KNOWN HAVE THE GRAND GULF POSTMARK.

This cover was mailed at the New Orleans wharfside post office and was carried up river to Grand Gulf Miss., where it was postmarked again and carried inland to Port Gibson. We record only four such covers bearing the Grand Gulf postmark, and this is in far better condition than two others we have offered in recent years.
