1703 c Image5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). Margins to just in, horizontal wrinkle, cancelled by small manuscript "X" with matching "Clayton N.C. Apr. 18" postmark on oatmeal cover to Moffitt's Mills N.C. with Single Standing Soldier and Verse Patriotic design (SN-2, Verse 34), the uniform in the style of the 1820's, W. & J. Bonitz, Goldsboro N.C imprint, reduced at left not affecting the design or imprint, Fine, both of the two reported examples of this design are franked with the 5c Blue Lithograph, affixed in the same orientation, with manuscript "X" cancels and to the same addressee -- the other example (without manuscript postmark) was offered in Kilbourne Part One (Siegel Sale 1186, lot 626), another example which we identified as SN-2 in our 2014 sale of the Dr. Brandon collection is actually SN-3 -- illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 111, ex Weatherly, Everett and "Old Oak", where acquired by the Kilbournes in 1983 (Siegel Sale 619), with 1972 C.S.A. certificate signed by Billy Matz (Image)

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH THE 10-CENT ENGRAVED ISSUE.

The uniformed officer in this design resembles General P. G. T. Beauregard (as does SN-5). Among the designs depicting a detailed officer likeness, only MS-1 is actually labeled with Beauregard's name.

Blurry strike of double-circle datestamp ties 3c Rose (65) on greenish-gray cover to Levonia O. with bright yellow "For Land & Life, Children and Wife" Soldier and 11-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (SN-4), depicts a Confederate officer in uniform holding a saber in one hand and flag in other, reduced at right and some staining mostly confined to back, stamp with margin rub at bottom and clipped bottom right corner, otherwise Fine, probably a unique use of this design from Union-occupied Memphis, the uniformed officer in this design resembles General P. G. T. Beauregard (as does SN-5), the combination of the rare yellow design seen here as well as the Union use of a captured Confederate Patriotic design from occupied Tennessee, makes this an almost certainly unique cover, ex Brooks (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION OF A PAIR OF THE CONFEDERATE FIRST GENERAL ISSUE WITH THE BEAUREGARD PATRIOTIC DESIGN.
