VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE SMALLER "WHITE JACKSON FLAG" DESIGN WITH STARS ARRANGED IN A CROSS. DESIRABLE USED WITH THE 10-CENT ENGRAVED GENERAL ISSUE.
The second national Confederate flag, also known as the "White Jackson Flag" and "Stainless Banner" was introduced after its adoption by the Confederate government on May 1, 1863. Very few examples are known on Patriotic covers, as by 1863 paper shortages and printing expenses vastly decreased the usage of Patriotic covers. This "Far better to perish with honor...Than live as a Northerners slave" verse is one of a very few that makes reference to slaves or slavery. The sentiment expressed here is ironic.
Illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 87. With 1988 C.S.A. certificate (Image)
