The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History, Part 2 continued...

Patriotics–General Issues: 7-Star thru 13-Star Designs
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1667 c Image5c Light Blue, De La Rue (6). Two singles, somewhat irregular separation but intact, right stamp creases, tied by bold "Richmond Va. Jun. 24, 1862" circular datestamp on small neat cover with red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F9-2A), addressed to Atlanta Ga., lightly cleaned to remove soiling

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH THE 5-CENT DE LA RUE TYPOGRAPH.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag design (7 thru 13 stars). They are very rare.

1668 c Image5c Light Blue, De La Rue (6). Two, each has ample margins to slightly in, bright shade, minor wrinkling caused by drying gum, tied by "Notasulga Ala. Jul. 12" (1862) circular datestamp on small cover to Troy Ala. with red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F9-2B), reduced at left, slight wear

FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE CONFEDERATE 9-STAR FLAG, FRANKED WITH THE 5-CENT DE LA RUE TYPOGRAPH ISSUE.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Very few examples of the 9-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic designs are known, some of which have handstamped "Paid" markings and no stamps. This small, choice cover with the 5c De La Rue franking is one of the finest we have encountered (Image)

1669 c Image5c Blue, Local (7). Horizontal pair, cancelled by grids, without postmark on cover to Plattsburg Miss. with large red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag with Tassels Patriotic design (F9-3), edge tears and nicks, slight soiling, backflap reattached

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS LARGE FORMAT 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG. ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE OF THE FEW RECORDED 9-STAR PATRIOTIC DESIGNS.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare and are normally found with the F9-2 design. This design, with the large style flag and tassels (F9-3), is on a similar order of rarity to the other listed 9-Star design (F9-1). This 9-Star design is similar to F7-16, F8-12 and F10-14, each of which differ based on the stars (or lack thereof) in the center and corners.

1670 c Image5c Green, Stone 1-2 (1). Vertical pair with sheet margin at bottom, other sides large to touched at right, tied by "Richmond Va. Jan. 3, 1862" circular datestamp on lady's small embossed cover with scalloped flap imprinted with red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F10-3), addressed to Elysian Fields Tex., inconsequential tiny edge nicks

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR PATRIOTIC USE WITH THE 10-STAR FLAG PRINTED ON THE FLAP OF A LADY'S EMBOSSED ENVELOPE, FRANKED WITH A PAIR OF THE FIRST GENERAL ISSUE.

The scarcity of stationery in the Confederacy resulted in a wide variety of adversity measures, including the use of wallpaper, printed forms, turned covers and other re-used material for mailing letters. This lady's fancy embossed envelope was employed for such a use, printing the Patriotic flag on the flap. This is a very rare use. Outside of the two examples offered in this sale (see lot 1585 for the other) Power Search lists only one other similar cover, offered back in 1997 (Image)

1671 c Image10c Blue, Die A (11). Tied by Charlottesville Va. double-circle datestamp with unclear date (Jan. 1864 based on letter contents) on blue 10-Star Confederate Battle Flag and Verse Patriotic cover (F10-10, Verse 10) to Forge Bridge Va., original letter from Captain Louis J. Hawley of the 10th Virginia Cavalry, "Near Ivy Depot Va. Jan. 11th, 1864", fascinating war and slave content (see below), stamp with a couple small insect holes, light overall toning

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG DESIGN WITH 10 STARS ARRANGED IN A CROSS, WITH AN ORIGINAL LETTER DISCUSSING A SLAVE IN SERVICE TO THE 10th VIRGINIA CAVALRY.

The only other examples we have offered of this design since keeping computerized records were a front only from the Dr. Brandon collection and a similar cover to this one offered in Kilbourne Part One sale (without contents but likely from the same sender). The letter enclosed in this cover has some fascinating war and slave-related content. Captain Hawley is writing to a Mr. Jordan to update him on the condition of his "servant" Edwin. He states that Edwin is a very faithful and good servant and also "well pleased...he says he is glad he was not there when the Yankees came there as they might of taken him away.", Hawley goes on to lament that he heard of the recipient's loss of "6 Negroes & other property" when the Yankees came and states Edwin is anxious to know the names of the "servants" they took. It is clear that this "servant" was a slave, though it is questionable whether or not he was "well pleased" not to have been taken by Union troops. The verse on the cover offers a fascinating contradiction with the letter, as it states "Far better to go to the grave, and better to die as a freeman, than live as a Northerner's slave."

Bonitz imprint, stamp has sealed tears at bottom, cover with sealed tears at top

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE 10-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER WITH THE 10-CENT LITHOGRAPH FROM STONE Y.

1673 c Image5c Green, Stone 1-2 (1). Two, ample to large margins, tied by blue "Norfolk Va. Apr. 7, 1862" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Centre Ala. with red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag and Verse Patriotic design (F10-16, Verse 46), "Sold only by Vickery & Company, Norfolk" imprint, reduced at right and tiny corner repair at top right (not affecting stamp), left stamp with faint margin crease at top

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS 10-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH TWO OF THE 5-CENT GREEN FIRST ISSUE LITHOGRAPH.

This is also a scarce Confederate use from Norfolk, which was permanently occupied by Union forces one month after this cover was mailed. We have encountered only a few examples of this design, each used from Norfolk with General Issue stamps, and most are faulty to a far greater degree than the cover offered here. This is also the latest use of this design that we have offered.

1674 c Image10c Dark Blue, Die A (11b). Margins to in on three sides, tied by "Savannah Ga. Oct. 16" circular datestamp on cover to Augusta Ga. with Small 10-Star Confederate Battle Flag with Gold Stars on Crossed Red Stripes Patriotic design (F10-18), printed on flap, some soiling and mended hole on backflap

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST CONFEDERATE FLAG DESIGNS. IT IS ONLY KNOWN PRINTED ON THE FLAPS OF TWO COVERS, AND THIS IS THE ONLY ONE OF THE TWO THAT WAS CARRIED IN THE MAILS.

We record (as does the Wishnietsky book) only two examples of this rare design. The other was offered in our sale of the Dr. Brandon collection (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 157) and it was carried privately or by military courier. This cover, with the 10c Engraved Issue, is a great Patriotic rarity.

Apr. 12, 1862" circular datestamp on cover to Hermitage La. with red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F10-19), "R. Barton, Bayou Sara" imprint, restored and extended at bottom edge where cover was roughly opened

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS 10-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN. A WONDERFUL RARITY MADE MORE DESIRABLE BY THE PRESENCE OF THE 5-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH.

This design is the same as F7-6 and F8-9, with the eighth star added to the center and the 9th and 10th stars added to the top left and bottom right corners. This is also the only design listed with the Barton, Bayou Sara imprint.

Illustrated in C.S.A. Catalog on p. 432 and in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 59, where stated "one reported". C.S.A. Catalog value $7,500.00 (Image)
