The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History, Part 2 continued...

2¢ Brown Red Engraved
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1368 c Image2c Brown Red (8). Block of five, large margins to just in at top, tied by five strikes of blue "Clemmonsville N.C. Aug. 8" circular datestamp on buff cover to Huntsville N.C., the back is separated and reattached in top corners but is original and complete, less the top flap, bottom left stamp small tears

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF A BLOCK OF FIVE OF THE 2-CENT "RED JACK" ISSUE ON COVER.

There are very few recorded blocks of the 2c Jackson Engraved issue on cover, and the small number we have encountered have mostly been blocks of four. We sold a block of eight plus a pair in 2015 but it was pen-cancelled and faulty.

With 1966 and 2018 P.F. certificates. The most recent certificate calls this a "front, separated and reattached at top left and top right." While this is technically correct, it is far more desirable than an ordinary front as it contains the full back (less the top flap). Ex Finney and Antrim (with their backstamps). Purchased by the Kilbournes from Jack Molesworth in 1966 for $1,500 (Image)

1369 c Image2c Brown Red (8). Five singles with full to large margins, arranged as a strip with large-margined single of 10c Blue, Die B (12), tied by four strikes of Richmond Va. circular datestamp with apparent date of Feb. 22, 1865, on oatmeal cover to Prospect Depot Va. "SSRR" (Southside Railroad)

VERY FINE. A RARE COMBINATION OF FIVE SINGLES OF THE 2-CENT JACKSON ENGRAVED ISSUE WITH THE 10-CENT ENGRAVED DIE B.

The standard Confederate rate for any distance after June 30, 1862 was 10c. This cover was presumably overweight and necessitated a 20c franking. This combination of issues is extremely rare -- particularly to pay a double rate. On the few occasions we have offered a combination of Scott Nos. 8 and 12 (or 11), the usage was to pay a circular (or drop) plus forwarded rate or rarely an advertising fee.

Ex Caspary, Meroni and Middendorf. With 1961 and 2018 P.F. certificates (Image)
