10c Blue “TEN” Engraved
Lot Sym. Lot Description
761 ogbl Image10c Blue, "TEN" (9). Vertical block of 22 with huge left sheet margin, original gum, creases (a bit heavy between left two vertical rows), scattered toned spots, bottom stamp at right clipped corner, couple pinholes, manuscript "Confederate Stamps" in margin probably written during or after the war when the stamps were found

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLES OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES "TEN" ISSUE. A MARVELOUS ARTIFACT OF THE EARLY 10-CENT ENGRAVED PRINTING FROM THE FIRST DIE AND COPPER PLATE.

This is the largest multiple we have offered in one of our auctions since the 1990's and in all our Rarities sales since 1964. The C.S.A. Catalog states that an unused block of 30 is recorded, which is presumably the block illustrated in the 1929 Dietz catalogue, the whereabouts of which is not known to us (some reports say it was cut apart).

762 ogbl Image10c Blue, "TEN" (9). Horizontal block of eight, original gum, h.r. at top, large to huge margins except along left vertical pair, bright shade and paper without any gum toning

EXTREMELY FINE BLOCK OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES "TEN" ISSUE -- ONE OF THE FINEST MULTIPLES IN EXISTENCE.

This block shows the misalignment of subjects (the lefthand vertical entries are significantly lower than the others) and the short transferring (second stamp from left in bottom row) that make the "TEN" plate such a fascinating subject for study.

765 c Image10c Blue, "TEN" (9). Large to huge margins including right sheet margin, vivid color, tied by beautifully clear strike of "Richmond Va. Apr. 24, 1863" circular datestamp on folded letter to Quincy Fla.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT "TEN" ON COVER, MAILED ONE DAY AFTER THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED DATE OF USE.

For many years this cover was the earliest known use of the 10c "TEN" issue. The C.S.A. and Scott catalogues now list April 23, 1863, as the earliest use. In any event, this is a superb cover.

Ex Wiseman and from our 1968 Rarities of the World sale where acquired by the Kilbournes. Raymond Weill backstamp. Scott Retail $1,500.00 as normal use (April 1863 uses are separately listed but unpriced) (Image)
