721 c Image10c Rose (5). Ample to large margins, tied by clearly struck "Okolona Miss. Sep. 29" (1864) circular datestamp on U.S 3c Red on Buff Nesbitt entire (U10) to Capt. N. Blackwell 43rd Miss. Regt., Adams' Brigade, Loring's Div., Army of Tenn. at Lovejoy Ga., turned and re-addressed by Capt. Blackwell to his sister in New Albany Miss. (no postmarks), with letter datelined "Near Decatur Ala. Oct. 28th 1864" which mentions "We get mails occasionally... We have destroyed a great deal of railroad... and captured a good many prisoners...", stamp has small tear and light surface scuffs, but Very Fine for this remarkable use, a 10c Rose used on an obsolete 3c Nesbitt entire is rare enough, but this turned use from a Confederate officer with the original letter is truly outstanding, ex Dr. Brandon (Image)

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF THE TWO COLOR-CHANGE LITHOGRAPHS IN EARLY 1862 TO PAY THE 15-CENT TRIPLE RATE FOR DISTANCE UNDER 500 MILES.

The 5c under-500 miles rate was in effect while General Issue stamps were available for only 8-1/2 months, from mid-October 1861 through June 30, 1862. Covers with a single 5c Green and single 10c Blue used together for the triple 5c under-500 miles rate are very rare. The 1862 color-change Lithographs -- 5c Blue and 10c Rose -- were issued in early 1862, leaving an even shorter period for the two to be used together. This cover with a single of each is extremely rare. The distance between Gainesville and Livingston is only 20 miles -- it once contained legal papers in a court case. (Image)

VERY FINE. ONE OF THE RAREST COMBINATIONS OF CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUES AND A REMARKABLY CHOICE COVER.

The 10c Rose is rare used with any other stamps. This is the only non-forwarded use in combination with a Scott No. 1 that we have encountered.
