633 ogbl Image5c Green, Stone 2, "Twin Scrolls" Misplaced Transfer (1 var). Block of 40 from the top left pane of 100, comprising the top four rows of the transfer stone of 50, including Misplaced Transfer of Position 1 entered over Position 10, the previous entry fully visible at bottom left and showing the "Twin Scrolls" variety, Position 20 also a Misplaced Transfer with re-entry using Position 11, sheet margins at top and left with portions of stamps from the adjacent transfer at right, dry original gum, creases throughout as this was folded at one time, few other small flaws and Positions 3-4 with internal tear

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 5-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH FROM STONE 2. IT IS MADE EVEN RARER BY THE PRESENCE OF THE "TWIN SCROLLS" MISPLACED TRANSFER OF POSITION 1 OVER POSITION 10 -- WHICH ORIGINATES FROM ONLY ONE PRINTING STONE. A GREAT CONFEDERATE STATES GENERAL ISSUE RARITY.

The Misplaced Transfers were caused when a transfer on the printing stone was deemed defective and in need of replacement. The entry was erased and if the new entry was pulled from a different position on the transfer stone, then a Misplaced Transfer is created. On one printing stone laid down with Transfer Stone 2, Misplaced Transfers are found in all four of the 50-subject transfers at Position 10. The Position 10 example offered here, from the upper left transfer on the printing stone, was replaced with Position 1, and is the most pronounced of all the Misplaced Transfers. The doubling of the scroll at bottom left is the telltale feature and is known as the Twin Scrolls variety. The stamp below is also a Misplaced Transfer, with Position 11 entered over Position 20.

A review using Power Search and our auction catalogue library reveals the rarity of large multiples of the first Confederate States Issue, particularly from Stone 2. The famous Ackerman complete sheet of 200 is from Stone 1; it was broken into the unique left pane of 100, as well as two right half-panes of 50 (bottom half is ex Hall). Noted Confederate Lithograph specialist Leonard Hartmann believes the block offered here is the largest known Stone 2 multiple.
