FRESH AND EXTREMLEY FINE. A RARE AND SUPERB ATLANTA GEORGIA POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL PINK ENTIRE WITH THE 11-STAR FLAG AND TENT PATRITOIC DESIGN.
Fewer than a dozen Patriotic covers are known with the Atlanta Postmaster's Provisional handstamp. Most we have seen have the hand-held flag design (F11-9). This is the only Tent design we have encountered.
Ex Matthies and acquired by the Kilbournes at the 1969 Siegel sale of her collection, which also included the "Angell" covers (Siegel Sale 353, lot 983) (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. FEWER THAN TEN EXAMPLES OF THE CHAPEL HILL POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ENTIRE ARE RECORDED, OF WHICH THREE ARE ON PATRIOTIC COVERS.
The three recorded Chapel Hill Provisional entires are all dated within four days of each other, in January 1862. Each has this 10-Star Flag design (one is a turned cover). This is the finest of the three. (Image)
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE IUKA MISSISSIPPI POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A PATRIOTIC COVER. ONLY ONE OTHER IS RECORDED IN CROWN.
The Crown survey lists only two Iuka Mississippi Provisional covers with Patriotic designs. The other example has a Jefferson Davis Medallion (Siegel Sale 1104, lot 2130).
Ex Duckworth. Illustrated in Crown on p. 462 (Image)
VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE KNOXVILLE 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ON A PATRIOTIC COVER.
The only other example we record of a No. 47XU5 Patriotic is the Flag and Cannon cover from our sale of the Boshwit collection (Siegel Sale 940, lot 308), which is offered in the following lot. (Image)
The only other example we record of a No. 47XU5 Patriotic is the 7-Star Flag cover offered in the previous lot.
Ex Hart and Boshwit (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF TWO MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONALS ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.
The Memphis 5c provisional is known on Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic covers in single-color Blue, Black and dual-color Red and Blue. All are rare, and we believe the Red and Blue is the most visually striking.
Ex Matthies and Matz (Image)
FINE APPEARANCE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 5-CENT MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A 12-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER.
Ex Walcott, Antrim, Pope and Powell. Illustrated in 1959 and 1986 editions of the Dietz catalog. With 1986 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE USE OF THE MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A FLAG-AND-CANNON PATRIOTIC COVER.
Ex Felton. With 1989 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE. THIS 11-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG IS ONE OF THE RAREST PATRIOTIC DESIGNS KNOWN. TO FIND IT USED WITH THE 5-CENT NASHVILLE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL IS EXTRAORDINARY. A PHENOMENAL EXHIBITION ITEM.
Our records of the Nashville Postmaster's Provisional contain only two other uses on Patriotic covers. The Rudy and Powell collections contained a 7-Star Confederate flag on cover with a Nashville 5c Grayish Brown (61X5 var), which realized $27,000 hammer the last time it was sold in our Sale 1104 in 2015. That flag, while scarce, is not as rare as the 11-Star flag on this cover. In addition, there is the iconic Hanging Lincoln cover with two 5c Nashville Brick Red stamps. Apart from those two covers, we do not record any other Nashville adhesives on Patriotic covers. This cover appeared in the 1973 Siegel sale featuring the Robert W. Baughman collection (Sale 399, lot 188).
This design with ten stars in a circle and one star at the center of a slightly elongated flag is listed in the C.S.A. Catalog with a $10,000.00 value, without regard to the Nashville Provisional use (Image)
